Trading up for Travis Hunter?

you trade down and get 4 picks on day 1 and day 2 that should be 4 starters.

If you trade up to get Hunter you get one player on day 1 and day 2.

Given the state of the Cowboys roster, which move sounds smarter?
Assumption.

How many of our second rounders are starters?

I respect the thought process and would agree that this is the more likely route the Cowboys will go, but they key word you used there is "should be" 4 starters. Granted the depth of this draft class is supposed to have increases the odds of hitting on some of those day 2 picks you just dont have very good odds overall. Looking over the last few drafts the Cowboys had in the 1st and 2nd round....

2024 - Guyton & Kneeland - Neither were quality starters year 1, although its too early to declare either a bust
2023 - Mazi & Schoon - Neither have been quality starters yet, both are approaching bust territory
2022 - Tyler Smith & Sam Williams - One plus starter and one solid rotational guy (so far)
2021 - Parsons & Joseph - One major hit and one total bust
2020 - Lamb & Diggs - Two hits
2019 - Non & Hill - Hill was a total bust
2018 - LVE & Williams - Two decent players
2017 - Taco & Awuzie - Taco is an obvious bust - Awuzie has been maybe league average for his career?

Even 1st round picks you see about a 50% bust rate on depending on your definition of a bust, and it only goes up as you get into the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I think its something like only 10% of 3rd round picks will ever make even a pro bowl in their career. I'm certainly not against a trade down to load up on picks, but I wouldnt pass on the opportunity to go get a an elite player either when you have a chance, just because your GM has put you in a position where you really need those day 2 picks to plug in right away.

How many of our 1st rounders should be starting? The 1st round, especially bottom half of the round comes with a higher whiff rate than people realize. We only have 5 former 1st round players drafted by us on the roster right now. 3 of them are pretty good....the other two were two of the worst at their positions in 2024.

Many agree Hunter is the best prospect in the draft and is a special talent in a class that doesn’t have many. He plays at two valued positions in which the Cowboys have needs at. Playing both is unrealistic but doesn’t mean he cannot get a package on the other side of the football.

If the cost isn’t franchise changing, the team needs to consider such a move.
Noooooooooooooo. Huge mistake.

You only trade up for a quarterback. Like you said most of those trades lately have been horrible.
I cannot disagree with you my friend. I'm going with your take. But if someone else wants to put themselves out on the line and chance it, it would still be exciting.

In what world are they starters? Schoon has gotten a few starts via injury but thats it. In 2023 Williams received more snaps on special teams than he did on defense. Kneeland had 255 snaps over 11 games. I guess those guys may have technically gotten a start somewhere along the lines in that they were out there for the first snap of the game, but no one would call either player a starter.

This year I would have to imagine going into camp Parsons & Fowler are top of the depth chart for your edge players. You seem to have a pretty low bar for what a starter is.

I would not wish that on this kids career. Let him go somewhere he can fulfill his NFL destiny

The risk of going and trading away a bunch of prime picks to chase an elite talent for this team is higher than most teams. If Hunter doesn't turn into a stud, the downside is larger than for other teams.

Why? Because our franchise refuses to use FA like other teams. They have openly admitted they do not use FA to get starters or high level players. Those players come from the draft. So when your PRIME means of adding players that can fill starting roles and make large impacts is solely the draft, you can't be trading away a mix of top picks over a couple years.

You just can't. Would I like Hunter? Sure. Would I run to the desk with the card if he were there at 12? Absolutely. Should we trade 12, our 2nd, next year's 1st and maybe a third this year or next year? Nope. We don't have the luxury. We need those picks to try to land players that can fill immediate holes. One CB/WR (and we aren't even sure what position he will be best suited for in the NFL) doesn't change the trajectory of this franchise given how we are built.

I have seen Johnson cover and shut down two top 10 drafted receivers that if they came out in this draft would be top 5 players. With Dak we need running back 5, running back 6, ect. If we were a player away I would do it but to get in the top 4 you going to have give up a 1 for next season as well. That might be a top 10 pick in a better draft.

I am from the school you only trade up into the top 5 to get a quarterback.

Is this one of the shutdowns you're referencing? @WillieBeamen what are your thoughts on this video?
