But really it started yesterday when the Cowboys arrived in Oxnard.
I've been anticipating the start of training camp every year since Dec 1963. Why then? That was when the Dallas Cowboys drafted Bob Hayes in the 1964 NFL draft with the fourth pick of the seventh round and number 88 overall. The Boys used a future pick on the Olympic gold medal winner and 'fastest man in the world' as did the AFL's Denver Broncos. I became an immediate Cowboy fan. The 64 team only got 4 wins but the next year they went 7-7. That team was the first Cowboys team to play a playoff game. Wasn't much of a playoff game even though they called it the Playoff Bowl. It was the consolation prize to the number 3 and 4 teams of the league who missed out on winning their conference and getting to the real postseason.
Anyway this December marks my 50th anniversary with the team and I always feel like this year is the most excited I've every been about the Cowboys.
Know what? This year may actually be that year.
Cowboys finish first in the East with a 10-6 record. After that the crystal ball grows dim and hazy. I can't see much without a lot of light these days.
Look and tell me what the crystal ball reveals.
