Hey guys and gals. Its slow, its the offseason, and I'm bored. I got to thinking, which training camp battles are you looking forward too and why?
Here's my list (not in order of importance):
3rd String QB: Matt Moore, Matt Baker, Richard Bartel. - Why do I find this important and interesting? Pretty simple. We all know what Romo can do and only the season will show if he can do it consistently, and we all know what Brad Johnson can do, but which of these three guys wins the 3rd spot, may be our next Jason Garrett. Nothing spectacular, but a solid backup and someone who could be a spot starter should Romo go down after Johnson is gone.
FB: Deon Anderson, Oliver Hoyte, Lou Polite. - I think Anderson wins it, but I've been on the Polite bandwagon since he played for Pitt. I think which fullback they pick depends on what type of system the 'boys run and whoever fits it best. BUT, they only keep one fullback either way.
Bottom 3 WR Spots: I think it's pretty obvious we keep Owens, Glenn, and Crayton. I also think we keep 6 WRs. But who are the final three? I think unless they bomb out completely Miles Austin and Sam Hurd make the squad again. Austin returns kicks and has big play POTENTIAL. Hurd has sure hands and contributes on coverage units. The last spot for me is a tossup between Stanback and Richardson from the CFL. I think Stanback could be a wasted pick if Richardson shows alot while Stanback is out. I don't think Rector makes the team because he's had many chances before and can't do it. My pick for the bottom three are Austin, Hurd, and Stanback even though I think it's conceivable to be any one of these five.
Left Guard: Pat McQuistan and Kyle Kosier. - I hope McQ gets the spot, but only if he earns it. I think it could establish our interior line for years with McQ, Gurode, and Davis. Also it's allows Kosier to be a backup where he's played all 5 OL spots.
Oustide Linebacker: Greg Ellis vs. Anthony Spencer. - I think if Ellis is fully recovered then, he has the starting spot, but you never know if Spencer plays well. Spencer starting would allow Ellis to be a situational pass rusher and may keep him fresh and more productive.
Inside Linebacker: Bradie James vs. Bobby Carpenter and Akin Aydole vs. Kevin Burnett. - I'd like to see Carpenter and Burnett win the spots, but I honestly don't know if KB can. I think that by mid-season Carpenter will be starting over James though.
Other position battles I'm less concerned about are Dime Corner (Reeves, Jones, Ball, and Brown), Free Safety (Hamlin vs. Watkins), Backup Center (Procter vs. Derilek), and Kicker (Gramatica vs. Folk). The guys I think win those position battles are in bold.
Any other position battles you guys find more important? Anything you disagree with? Thoughts?
