Transition tag question

As I understand it, Prescott immediately becomes a free agent when the final game ends against the Giants. However, no team can contact \ negotiate with him until the 15-day span Feb. 23 - Mar. 9, the Franchise/Transition Period, and then after the Cowboys make their decision.
Is that correct?

The FT is the same as a one year deal.
This past offseason, soon to be Free agents were under contract up until March 18th, the official start of free agency, 2 days after the tampering process.
So, Dak becomes a free agent as soon as free agency starts. The Cowboys can start to talk to him about an extension as soon as the last game is played. Dallas has until the start of the tampering window to place the tag on him.

No other team can reach out to Dak until the 16th* of March and that's if the Cowboys don't place the exclusive franchise tag on him.

*Assuming the same dates as the 2020 offseason for the 21 offseason.

I wanted them to do that this year. The question of Dak's "market value" would've been answered and the Cowboys still had the right to match any offer and keep him.

I think this is the best thing that can happen. Depending where we pick at.
As if there is a QB available when we pick if in the top 5 rounds.

So se will know the value, and if he gets an offer, they can decide, chance a QB in the draft, and get picks for Dak. Or match the offer and go defense. If Dak is tagged I think it puts things on hold until a contract is in place. therefore FA's will slip on by, not that they would sign a top FA anyway.

What is the compensation for the Cowboys if a team makes a offer while a player is on the transition tag?

They can but should they? There's a bit of an image problem with management in not getting that long term deal done and then he gets injured. The black hats were on management, only here was one on Prescott.

Some here think a player should always take one for the team, just like they'd do.o_O

They can match it or let them have him and get 2 1st rounders and that was the question last season, would any other team give that up and pay Prescott what he wanted?

The transition tag on a QB is an insult and that's why they didn't use it last year.

Nothing. It's a take it or leave it tag with no ability to get a compensatory pick the following year.

The best example of the trans tag I know of was the Dolphins back in 2016 slapping it on Vernon Oliver. They got word of the Giants offering that huge 17mil a year contract and quickly dropped the tag from VO. They were able to get some draft compensation from the Giants signing Vernon as an UFA

The smart move is just sign him to a 4-5 year deal. It’s cheaper against the cap in early years and we aren’t likely to have a shot at either of the top 2 QB’s in this draft
Then use the draft to improve the team because fixing this team in FA this year isn’t gonna be possible

While back in the day, the biggest issue with the Transaction Tag was the infamous "poison pill" that would include some cause in the contract that would make it more difficult for the original team to match an other team's offer. Luckily, this was done away with back in 2012.

So the argument is, "but it will set the market value for the player". Well what happens when a team is willing to give your Franchise QB a contract that is higher than what the original team thought they would anyways? If a team thinks they are close to a SB or not going to pick high in the next few drafts may just do that since getting a Franchise QB is more difficult to find than any other position.

Now you lose the player, don't have a Franchise QB any more, and get NOTHING in return.

So I'm going to assume you meant the Non-Exclusive Franchise tag where you would get two First Round picks in return.

Again, the only teams that I believe would be willing to do that are teams that are really good and are unlikely to pick high in the draft anyways, and those that are just a QB away from being real competitors, so again, the return of picks will be in the lower half / third of the first round.

That is a steep price to pay for losing a franchise QB, which is why you just don't see this happening with many non-QB franchise players, let alone franchise QBs.

JMHO

No, the transition tag does not give the original team any compensation if they do not match the offer. Only rights to match the offer.

To get the two 1st Round picks, that would be the Non-Exclusive Franchise Tag (vs the Exclusive Franchise Tag the Cowboys used on Prescott).

I'm not sure if that's completely true because the transition tag isn't truly the equivalent of unhindered free agency. For example I think there are suitors that would be interested in pursuing certain free agents, but that may be less interested if they felt they were just setting the price for the existing team to match.

I'm not sure Dak would have even signed the transition tag given that the pay level for retaining a player is significantly lower than it is with the transition tag.

can the transition tag be placed on Dak?

If they were going to use the Transition tag it should have been for this year. It's pointless to use it on the second tag as it doesn't offer a discount. It only offers a discount on the first tag. No matter what tag they put on him a second time it's 38 million for the year.
