If it means anything, this was before Dallas took him.

I would advise you to read the whole article, but here's the gist of it

"In the end, it is likely that both Jones and Frederick will become starting centers in the NFL, but I think the level of player they will become is different. Jones will be the tough, scrappy over-achiever who cannot get movement on in-line run blocks and constantly has trouble blocking the big 320+ pound DT’s, both on run blocks and in pass protection. Frederick on the other hand will never be confused with one of the most athletic centers, but he will be one of the more physically dominant ones in the league. He will get his hands on the defensive lineman and will be able to dictate the play to them. Frederick’s skill set will enable him to stop power rushers in their tracks, adjust to quick pass rush moves in a small area and constantly control his man to open holes on inside runs. In addition, in today’s NFL where so many teams run 34 defenses, Frederick will have no trouble blocking the nose tackle one on one, while Jones will struggle in that area. For these reasons, I would definitely draft Frederick before I would select Jones"

I like Jones but given the past history of getting OL players dealing with injuries not sure if Jones was worth the risk.

That was a pretty good article. Not because it had a relatively favorable view of Frederick's play (it should have, if he was the best OC available in this draft). It's a good description of his strengths and weaknesses.

It sounds like he will bring some mean back to the line.

Frederick is known for his position flexibility and his strong technical skill. He could also be known for his nastiness.

"Unfortunately, he has an extreme nastiness," Frederick's college coach Bret Bielema told ESPN Radio 103.3 FM in Dallas. "I had to get on him a few of times. He broke a couple guys' arms and wrists by throwing them down on the ground and whacking them a little bit after the play, on our own team. ..."

I think we are putting too much faith in all the media rankings of these 2 players (3 centers). Look at where the other 2 centers are drafted, it tells you what the scouts and teams think of them

I would have rather seen Frederick compared to Schwenke. I'm no scout, but I didn't think there was a huge difference between the two. Kinda hurt when I saw Schwenke went in the 4th to be honest.

I didn't like the pick when it came in but the more I read of him the more I am opening up to him.

Perhaps the scouts got this one wrong and perhaps that just wishful thinking on my part.

We'll see but I'm liking him more and more as time goes by.

I don't see how anyone could not like the player. Frederick is gonna be a huge improvement regardless of whether he plays C or RG. Its just the value and where he was taken is the big thing we are going to have to get past.

the biggest issue with barrett jones is he is coming off of injury and that generally means a redshirt year.

if he can't lift and play now it is tough to come on during the year for a rookie. once they get behind it is often until next training camp.

all frederick has to do is shave, graduate and show up, lol.

while i love power and frederick is the power guy i'd have been glad to have both but barrett is hard to justify in a year with only 6 selections. once we got the extra pick maybe a late round grasp.

Yeah, but Barrett Jones went in the 4th round. If Frederick was drafted in the 3rd round that paragraph would hold more weight than talking about a 1st rounder vs. a 4th rounder.

Schwenke was not even in the same zip code with Frederick until after the combine. Frederick is the best C in this draft, bar none. Go look at the positional rankings prior to the combine if you are not familiar with Badgers' football.

Sorry, but thats not true at all. I'm not arguing that Frederick was the best C, but Schwenke gained a lot of attention after the senior bowl. Scouts were raving about his performance there. The gap really wasn't that big, the combine only closed it more.

I actually thought Frederick was our best pick in the entire draft, even when factoring in "value." Glad they took him over Floyd considering how often top rated DT's turn out to be busts. That position is about as bad as QB but without the upside.

I agree with the good takes on Fred.

My hesitation has to do with his inability to pull effectively and limited athleticism will put a ceiling on his ability.

However, if he continues to flash that ability to maintain the pocket, assist those beside him when occupied, elite alertness to blitzes and stunts, intelligence to make all the line calls, great strength at the point of attack with ability to turn his man often and some ability to get out to the second level and interfere with the LB flow then I think we'll all be happy with the pick.

The only thing is that I"m not convinced he'll be the Center in his rookie year. I think they may let him adjust to the league by starting him at RG so he can get acclimated to the game without having to play Center.

I still think his might be our best lineup next year assuming we sign Moore like I hope:

Smith Moore Costa/Bern Fred Parnell

Now that is a physical and versatile OL that should be able to run block and pass block well.
