I'll admit this was my first reaction. However, for months every source has told us that after the top 15 to 20 picks, the next 60-80 picks are basically all about the same grade. It's a huge bunch of quality players stretching well into the third round. In my mind Travis was taken near the top of the range but still within range.

Over the last several years, Damien Woody, Jeff Faine, Chris Spencer, Nick Mangold, Alex Mack, Eric Wood and Markice Pouncy are the only Centers taken in the 1st round, going back to 1999.

I just don't see Fredrick as a guy who is as talented as these guys.

So we should have let the center position be our achilles heel for yet another season while we waited for one to be the absolute BPA at our draft slot? I agree it was a (slight) reach, but feel that is acceptable if the position is a HUGE need.

great pick because it is who they wanted at that spot, and they know a heck of a lot more about what they need--we've been burned too often by the consensus pick when most starters in the NFL were ignored before draft day

I don't think Frederick is gonna play center...

I agree.

Would have been an amazing coup at #47.

#31 is a big reach.

Anyway, he's an instant starter at either OC or OG.

Let's hope we can snag 3 more starters today. :)

Instant starter says more about our line than his talent IMO.

I'm not happy with the trade back with both Williams and Floyd sitting there, but quite frankly last night was the absolute worst case scenario as far as the way it fell vs our needs. We werent the only team reaching for oline either with both Kyle Long and Pugh going way ahead of where they were graded. The Jest really screwed us when they took Richardson with their second 1st rounder instead of an O player to help their horrible offense. If the Jest dont take Richardson, either he or Star falls to 18 and would have been our pick.

Weaknesses Girth in the middle takes away some quickness behind the line, takes time to get around the tackle and gets tripped up in traffic when on the move. Gets out-quicked by interior blitzers and occasionally stops his feet in pass protection. Can lose his balance when leaning into his man, though he recovers well enough to get back in the play.
His 2012 listed weight was 338 (higher than 2011) but he came into the combine at 312.

Well, I guess if that's what you want to do, that's your business. However, not drafting a Center, that was pretty much rated as a 3rd round pick, in the 1st round does not preclude you for addressing the position. Heck, if you wanted to wait until the 2nd round, he still would have been there. There are several needs on this team. Center is just one of them. If he's the highest rated player on our board, fine, then he's the highest rated player on our board but, if that's the case, then we have bigger problems then just reaching. We can't evaluate talent the way we should be able to and that's why you reach for players when you should be picking guys who can help you at positions of value. Nobody sees him as a 1st round pick except us.

It doesn't really matter what he weighs IMO. He's slow, regardless of his playing weight. It is what it is.

I though Schwenke was going to be a better value pick, too.

Don't like how tonight went down. Pretty much the worst case scenario for us at 18 if we didn't want Floyd. But once we moved all the way out of range of any of our first round graded guys, it really doesn't make much difference to me if we took the guy a dozen spots 'too early' at this level of players. There's a wide band of guys knotted up here with second round grades. Teams are going to 'reach' relative to the experts' draft lists because the grouping is pretty flat and teams are going to have favorites for their systems.

It just sucks that our guy wasn't there at 18, and then we got so little in the trade down. We'll have a better day tomorrow. If Frederick is a decent starter, that's a win. And we did pick up the extra pick.

Yep, could have had Schwenke and Floyd.

Jerry got cute, again.

I like Frederick, just not at that spot. Way too early.
