There are rumblings that the Cowboys are very high on the big small schooled Tackle, Trevor Penning. What I gather is that he is a mauler in the run game, gets a consistent push and virtually impossible to bull rush. Many argue due to his lack of bend, probably better off on the right side, but the Cowboys maybe considering him inside at LG.

Makes a lot of sense, draft a future starting Tackle, kick him inside early and then develop him to play Tackle when a spot opens up. We have seen this with Collins, even Larry Allen in the past. Heard Tony Pauline state, he was the best Tackle at the Senior Bowl practices.

What we do know with Penning is that our run game improves day 1 and Dak will no longer have to worry about bull rushes from their LG any longer.

Thoughts?

Offensive tackle: Trevor Penning, Northern Iowa (6-6, 330)-Dane

It wasn’t always pretty with Penning this week. He struggled to consistently play with balance, either because he gave up his chest or tried to overpower everything. And some of his finishing techniques were out of control. But all the NFL scouts I talked to this week raved about his nasty temperament and his ability to piss off edge rushers as a result of that.

Coming from the FCS level, Penning has dominant tape against inferior competition, so this was an important week for him. And although there were rough patches, he showed steady improvement each day and had his most consistent day of practice Thursday. I don’t think Penning had the type of week that will put him in the conversation to be a top-10 pick. But with his impressive length (34 3/4-inch arms) and movement skills for that size, I think he likely solidified himself as a top-32 prospect.

I’m not a big fan of small school guys in round 1…it’s going to take a great game at the Sr Bowl and 1st round athleticism testing for me to get on board.

I thought he was a blown up TE? And he doesnt have the athleticism to play the left side? Been thinking more Kenyon Green starts LG and kicks to LT when Tyron retires.

If we’re going OL at 24 I go Lindenbaum, Zion, Green, Penning in that order. The last 3 are LG’s.

I’ve been talking Penning all along. But after the practices and the combine I don’t think he falls to us. I think you can move him inside to LG if needed, but I think he’s going to be a really good RT. Even at the practices I see improvement from the start to the end of the week. The defensive players from the other squad voted him the best OL they faced for the week. I don’t mind the small school status 1 bit. You either see it in the player or you don’t.

Zion is finished product at LG and you know more of what you are getting? Green has played everywhere so he would have to grow at LG.
But he’s not as physically gifted as Green. Zion certainly made some money this week. Heard an interview he did. Extremely intelligent and smart. He’s going to be a very good player.

He reminds me of Travis Frederick. Travis wasn’t the most physically gifted but he could do everything you needed him to do. He was extremely smart (CS/Engineering double major I believe). His 40 was 5.58 and his bench was mediocre but he was a smart technician. I see the same in Zion. Also, Zion already has a degree in CS and is working on masters in cybersecurity.

Can someone explain why he can't be a LT?
That’s really the big question. To me he handles power better than speed. I’m not sure he has the feet to deal with the kind of edge rushers he’ll be dealing with on the left side. His technique needs some work but he can certainly improve. For me he’s every bit worth being picked at 24. Heck he could be the best OL that comes out of this class.

Do we know if Penning played any G in college? That’s make me feel better about him.

I just think if you want a pure, day one starter at LG, Green is your guy. I like Johnson as well.
