Trey Lance trade does nothing much for me personally

The issue is that Trey Lance is in Year 3 of arguably the most quarterback friendly offense in the NFL, and he still looked like an undrafted free agent out there. Going to a small school and getting injured doesn't explain that.

The 49ers even said publicly they were surprised Dallas (a.k.a., anyone) offered a 4th. A midround pick could have fetched OL or LB help to win now. Trading for a developmental 3rd string QB doesn't do that, and probably won't in the future. This isn't about risk/reward, it's about opportunity costs.

This might upset people, but this move shows that the Joneses are more focused on out-leveraging Dak's agent in contract negotiations at the moment than they are winning a Super Bowl.

How is this a marketing ploy? If people are complaining how much he sucks. Personally I think they felt there is a huge upside to a kid and would take him over another 4th round qb next year. We have garbage at backup, so why not gamble on a person who was in high demand a couple years ago? It may or may not be a good trade, at the end of the day a 4th rounder is not going to make or break your team so its very well worth the risk. Its much better than sitting around doing nothing and settling. People should complain about why we didn't give up a second rounder instead of a 4th due to how bad we pick in the 2nd round a lot.

This Trey Lance trade does nothing much for me personally. It seems like a marketing ploy wrapped up in the typical dysfunctional front office. If Mike McCarthy was not consulted before this move, it shows dysfunction within team leadership.

The pick is a pretty reasonable pick for a QB with plenty of physical tools to play the position. Lance could take years to develop into an actual NFL QB. Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo rode the bench for 3 years and Lance has had to battle lots of injuries thus far further slowing development. The biggest downside that others have mentioned is the guaranteed roster spot this season. Perhaps he gets “injured” in practice and then goes on injured reserve?

If he turns out to be nothing, at least it will be for a mid round pick instead of multiple first and mid rounders on non impactful wide receivers. This move can just barely negatively affect this season-and the same with next season. The potential upside is unproven-no matter how certain a poster is about Lance’s future abilities.
Almost everyone who isn’t a fanzone poster seems to like it.

One of the top quarterback gurus and developers in the history of the league pronounced Lance unfixable…..fans need to accept that
When did he “pronounce” that?

He didnt he actually said he felt like he failed Lance... but that will be called coach speak...Kyle probably feels Trey has an injury problem and after Jimmy G he wont bet on it. of course his QB's sure have a tendency for getting hurt.. maybe the QB guru is what is hurting them?

What did they market?
The brand as usual. All the major sports shows will have this topic discussed thoroughly this week. Whether Lance sucks or is great does not matter because the topic involves the QB position of the Cowboys and a recent top three pick.

He will not get cut. very good chance he will not get any playing time. Unless it is late in the 4th quarter and we have a big lead. Or injuries of course.

They will let him compete next season with Rush as the backup.
Yeah, I agree, just saying him getting cut this year is the absolute worst thing that could happen, and it’s not even a disaster.

Wait and see with an open mind seems reasonable to me.

I'm confused. I thought I watched Jerry himself say it was a quick decision and no consulting was done with McCarthy, or anyone.

I haven't heard McCarthy weigh in so I don't know if he is on board or not. Really, though... what's he going to say if asked.

Were you not aware of Jerry's explanation, or are you saying he is lying?
I heard Jerry say that once they called they did not want to get them off the phone. I also heard that he went to his scouting department.

It came down to the Cowboys liking the odds that Trey Lance could develop into a solid NFL QB better than they would a QB they drafted in the fourth round.

Kid has all the talent in the world.

It’s an amazing trade.

Not for Dak though.

He’s counting on another 200 million pay day.

That would, of course, wreck the team for years.

And it was a sudden opportunity that came up. Sometimes you have to jump on those. I have no problem with this gamble even if it fails in the long run. If you don't take chances once in a while then nothing will ever happen. You'll just stay in a perpetual state of mediocrity.

I feel the same. They may kinda believe in the trade but it seems like another "Oh look, we signed a "name" player". Regardless of whether he ever does the slightest for the team it allows the PR machine to keep rolling out "hope".
