Trick plays take many reps from practice.....with today's practice time rules, you need to be careful not to waste time.....that said, having a couple in your back pocket can pay dividends.

Yes. They need to be set up and the timing needs to be right.

Randomly calling them for no reason makes ZERO sense however.

Timing is everything, and there is an appropriate time for every play call.
This team currently has very bad timing offensively.

Bones probably tried to call at least one every game only to have McCarthy tell him to save it. He probably goes home and tricks his wife just to get it out of his system.

Special teams, not so much.

Given that a high percentage of trick plays result in someone other than the QB throwing a pass, I would have thought you were all in favour of them?

I'm not big on "trick" plays, but occasionally there's a time and place for it so it should still be in the play book.

Will it matter? Even if they do have them, they'll use them in the first few games then go back to what didn't work before later in the season.

I would much rather have them spend time practicing those plays that will work for them in the specific game plan for that week. Practice them so much that they are executed perfectly. Then you don't need trick plays. A famous quote that emphasizes the importance of focused practice and a high level of proficiency. :

Instead of becoming masters at the occasional trick play, I'd rather us become masters at misdirection. I'd rather every play create some doubt than to have the other team worried about a potential fake punt.

But, just for fun, my favorite Dak trick play was him doing a QB sneak with 13 seconds left in the season and no timeouts. He must of had a vacation planned and couldn't get a refund.

But, just for fun, my favorite Dak trick play was him doing a QB sneak with 13 seconds left in the season and no timeouts. He must of had a vacation planned and couldn't get a refund.

He was at the right place at the right time and 2 QB needed to go down for the Cowboys 666 to sit on the throne and produce potatoes without any toppings!!!

That helicopter kick vs Atlanta was a thing of beauty though.

A trick play has to come at a very unexpected time. It should be an occasional thing, and it will not take the place of having a good system in place.
