Triple Threat
The NFL season begins tonight, and so does the Patriots' quest for history

As the New England Patriots go about trying to win an unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title, the coach won't talk about it, and the players aren't allowed to. Any mention of a "three-peat" is removed from the team's transcripts.
Hear no evil, say no evil.
"We've done all the celebrating we needed to do last year," Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said in a national conference call this week. "The only thing I care about is this week."
The Patriots' third championship banner will be unveiled tonight at Gillette Stadium before their season opener against the Oakland Raiders. Coach Bill Belichick would like to ignore the ceremony, but the Patriots will be required to be on the field for part of the pregame festivities.
The Patriots might feel differently about these types of pregame ceremonies if a year from now they're celebrating being the first team since the 1965-67 Green Bay Packers to win three NFL titles in a row.
Third time's no charm
The New England Patriots have a chance to make history this season by becoming the first team win three consecutive Super Bowls. Here are how the other two-time winners fared in their try for a three-peat:
Team//Super Bowls won//Seasons//Third season result
Green Bay Packers//Super Bowls I, II//1966-67//6-7-1 in 1968, missed playoffs
Miami Dolphins//Super Bowls VII, VIII//1972-73//11-3 in 1974, lost in divisional round to Oakland
Pittsburgh Steelers//Super Bowls IX, X//1974-75//10-4 in 1976, lost in AFC Championship Game to Oakland
Pittsburgh Steelers//Super Bowls XIII, XIV//1978-79//9-7 in 1980, missed playoffs
San Francisco 49ers//Super Bowls XXIII, XXIV//1988-89//14-2 in 1990, lost in NFC Championship Game to NY Giants
Dallas Cowboys//Super Bowls XXXVII, XXVIII//1992-93//12-4 in 1994, lost in NFC Championship Game to San Francisco
Denver Broncos//Super Bowls XXXII, XXXIII//1997-98//6-10 in 1999, missed playoffs
Three-peat
It is true that no team ever has won three consecutive Super Bowl titles, but the Green Bay Packers twice won three consecutive NFL titles:
Team//Years//Record in those three seasons
Green Bay Packers//1929-31//34-5-2
Green Bay Packers//1965-67//38-9-2
Third time's no charm
How other two-time Super Bowl winners have fared:

Miami Dolphins
SB VII, VIII (72-73)
