Does anybody know whether Romo was ever on the practice squad his first season or two? It's scary to think that Romo could have been had for practically nothing by any other team in the league.

It was a thought, but never happened following Tony Romo's rookie training camp.

Lucky for us.

He was also projected to be the odd man out the following camp after the arrival of Drew Henson, but the unexpected release of Quincy Carter saved his spot.

Yikes.

I could be wrong, but I remember hearing in retrospect that Sean Payton actually pushed for Romo to potentially start his rookie year.

I mean, I can't imagine he was that close to being cut if they were really considering that.

Edit - I may be confusing his rookie and 2nd year. I'm not sure. It's been a while. :)

Here's another trivia question about Romo -- how much was his original signing bonus as an undrafted free agent?

Sean Payton was all for it.

You can imagine the look Bill Parcells gave him.

Yeah, it's funny that so many critics love to give Sean Payton credit for Romo's success and making the team. Truth is the scouts knew about Romo (most team's scouts did) and Payton wanting to start Romo as a rookie would've likely killed any career he would've had.

Romo and the Cowboys were lucky enough to have a weak QB crew and Parcells being patient with him. His rookie year the QB's were Quincy, Hutch, and Stoerner and he easily beat out Stoerner. Could've had a problem in 2004, but Quincy got cut.

Never heard nor do I believe that Sean Payton ever wanted to start Romo as a rookie. Payton did state that he believed Romo was ready & wanted him to start in 2005. Don't know if either Jerry or Parcells believed he was ready but in any case wanted a big QB to start so they brought in Bledsoe.

Payton was a big time supporter of Romo nlt then his junior year in college (same college Payton & Mike Shanahan graduated from) & was in contact with him around that time. He talked about Romo to just about everybody while he was still a coach with the Giants. When Parcells hired Payton as his de factor OC, Payton continued to talk about Romo. We only gave Romo a $10,000 signing bonus while the Broncos offered him $20,000 & the Cards $25,000.

Parcells never attempted put Romo on the PS cause he knew Romo wouldn't make it thru waivers. A lot of GMs knew about Romo; in fact before the Buffalo game, the Buffalo GM claimed the Bills tried to sign Romo. The Raiders QB coach (Harbaugh) knew all about Romo & desperately tried to convince their GM to draft Romo around the 5th round.

While I take Dallas beat writers reports with a grain of salt, generally if you hear different reporters saying the same thing, it's pretty close to the truth. I've generally questioned a lot of things that Payton has done and I don't think it's too surprising that a young assistant coach would fall in love with some young QB from his alma mater and do something foolish like trying to get him to start right away.

Now that Payton has that experience under his belt, I don't think he would try and start a rookie QB right away in a million years. And I still think starting Bledsoe in 2005 was the right move for Romo and the Cowboys as well.

It's amazing how close we were to possibly still be searching for our starting QB today.
