Who can forget the reactions of fans around the nation when the Cowboys were able to draft Byron Jones and Randy Gregory, and then Sign La'el Collins immediately after the draft. This year, we may finally get to see what all the fans of other teams were crying about, with Jones back at CB, where he should have been all along, Gregory as the starting RDE, and Collins plugged in at RT.

Many said at the time that the Cowboys got the equivalent of 3 first round picks. These were scrumpdillyicious to read for Cowboys fans in 2015. Enjoy the flashback:

Trolling the Nation - Cowboys pick DE Randy Gregory - https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...ed-to-cowboys-picking-randy-gregory-well-crap

Trolling the Nation - Cowboys sign OT La'el Collins - https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...-fans-reacted-to-cowboys-signing-lael-collins

Hopefully, we'll all reeeeeeally get to enjoy the pain of other fans this season...

In addition to Byron Jones, Randy Gregory and La'el Collins, the Cowboys also drafted LB Damien Wilson in the 4th round, TE Geoff Swaim in the 7th round, and signed David Irving off the Chiefs Practice Squad on September 29th. They picked up Rod Smith off waivers from Seattle two weeks later on October 24th.

Cowboys starters this season from the 2015 rookie class.
  • RCB - Byron Jones
  • RDE - Randy Gregory
  • SLB - Damien Wilson
  • TE - Geoff Swaim
  • ROT - La'el Collins
  • 3DT - David Irving
Backups from 2015 Rookie Class
  • RB2 - Rod Smith
  • SLB2 - Justin March-Lillard

The addition of La'el Collins more than makes up for the Chaz Green whiff in the 3rd round. Any draft that lands you 6 starters, 4 of whom have legitimate All-Pro potential (Jones, Gregory, Collins, Irving) is a GREAT rookie class. As good as the 2016 draft class has been, the 2015 class still has the chance to be better in the end.

Cowboys starters from 2016 Rookie Class
  • RB - Ezekiel Elliott
  • MLB - Jaylon Smith
  • 1DT - Maliek Collins
  • QB - Dak Prescott
  • SCB - Anthony Brown
Backups from 2016 Rookie Class:
  • SS2 - Kavon Frazier
  • RB4 - Darius Jackson
  • TE4 - Rico Gathers
  • 1DT2 - Antwaun Woods
  • 1DT3 - Brian Price
  • CB5 - Duke Thomas
  • 3DT4 - Jihad Ward

That is 11 starters in two consecutive drafts, and a pile of backups - even if players like Jackson, Gathers, Price and Ward might get cut next week. This is a big reason the Cowboys have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL.

What exactly has Byron Jones showed you on the football field to prove that he has legitimate all pro potential? Are you looking at his broad jump numbers?

He has two career interceptions and hasn’t been a game changer in the slightest form or fashion...

These threads really make it clear how fans overreact to everything.
Yep..

Last time I checked they haven’t met their potential yet. Which I’m still feeling more indigestion instead of scrumdelious.

Collins still has the biggest upside since he didn’t cost us a pick. While the other 1st and 2nd round picks used more wisely at the time could have already paid benefits. We shall see.

He's been playing out of position. I understand the Cowboys were trying to keep their best 4 DB's on the field, and needed to keep Claiborne and Carr at CB. Jones had the flexibility to move to Safety. But he'll be a much better CB than he was a safety. He has tremendous speed (clocked at 4.33) and leaping ability. The best thing he's done so far is be able to take elite TE's out of the game with his coverage ability. But while he can play safety because of his range, he's never had the instincts for the position that much slower Safeties that are All-Pro players have. Putting him back on the edge will take advantage of his natural skills. Kris Richard had the insight and understanding to move him back, and I think he'll thrive.

No way this could turn out right could it Jumbo. I mean JJ did a deal with the devil didn't he. You could throw Jaylon Smith in there too. Bad JJ! We all know he's to blame for Freddy too. How could he draft "that guy" in the first round. Oh yes, I forgot he was a McClay pick. The rest will be too if it works out don't ya think ;)

This is a final move for him to save face for justifying his selection. I suspect Brown or Lewis could still beat him out if we allow them the opportunity but often teams continue to go with the 1st round pick anyway.

There’s still a possibility it could work out and Jerry would deserve credit. It’s not over until it’s over.

But we won’t get back 2016 season which 2 better 1st and 2nd rounds picks on defense might have been enough to stop Rodgers in playoffs. And maybe get by Atlanta in championship game.
