Troy Aikman on 4-game preseason: NFL says it’s all about fans, ‘Have yet to run into an NFL fan that loves’ it

Sportscaster Joe Buck and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman rehearse before hosting the 2015 Texas Medal of Arts Awards presented by the Texas Cultural Trust on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the Long Center in Austin, Texas.
(Ashley Landis/The Dallas Morning News)

Doesn’t look like Troy Aikman is a fan the NFL’s preseason.

The former Dallas Cowboys sent a series of tweets out during the team’s scrimmage with the San Francisco 49ers.

Before the team’s preseason game in San Francisco, owner Jerry Jones expressed his concern about playing in Levi Stadium.

Yeah, this has been growing for some time now. Its dumb. Cut it down to 2 preseason games and maybe a controlled scrimmage...........Make up the money somewhere else. Like I am sure the NFL is hurting for money.

They don't need preseason games. Heck, high school and college teams start the season without them. These guys are getting paid and are getting work throughout the offseason. Three to four weeks of training camp and start the season.

There's no doubt in my mind that within ten years, there will be two preseason games and an 18 game regular season

Nelson could have easily done that in a walk thru practice. He just caught the ball and went to the ground untouched.

When I was in HS in the 90's we had at least 2 scrimmages (starters 1 half reserves the 2nd), and 1 controlled scrimmage (10 downs to score from the 50)

well, the NFL isn't high school or college, practice speed isn't game speed and the way the rules are now with regards to practices because of collective bargaining which limits padded practices in the NFL, you need games for these guys to get reps...just not four though

I don't mind the preseason. I like seeing how these young guys do outside of practice... however...

There really hasn't been a whole lot of times that the people I have been watching have really made a difference or name for themselves, so maybe cutting down the amount of games would be a good idea.

Colleges do it without them just fine. High schools get them because their work in the offseason is very limited. Most cases you get two weeks of spring football and a "jamboree" and then fall practice....maybe one preseason game.

There is no need for 4 preseason games. First one the starters don't play in general or get one series. Last one almost no starters play. Just cut down to two.

THe injuries in live contact before games that count is awful.

If the preseason is reduced to two games, I fully expect the owners to campaign hard for an increase of two games in the regular season. I don't mind the cut down during the preseason but lengthening the regular season will be harder on the players remaining healthy before the playoffs begin.

Would much rather have two games that actually count instead of two games that are BS, cost the same as regular season games and you get about 1/4 of the value. Preseason games are one of the biggest ripoffs for the people that go to games as there is.

They need to just leave it alone..

If they get rid of preseason games then fine but don't add 2 more regular season games.

18 game season? No thanks. At 16 the games still mean something but 18 you can go 0-5 to start the year and still have playoff hope.

I'm just not sure how much the players' union will enjoy that type of counterproposal.

whenever i hear bill polian and others clamor for a developmental league, i think: we already have those games. they're called preseason, and they're terrible.

In my opinion what needs to happen immediately is to cut down the preseason to 2 weeks. Add an additional Bye week in the regular season, establish a plan for a development league in the near future (within 5 years), and hopefully expand to 18 weeks of football within 10 years. Though I wouldn't be against keeping it 16 games, with 2 bye weeks per team. That's my ideal formula.

I like the idea of two games and two controlled scrimmages. Something like this:

Week 1 - game
week 2 - scrimmage
week 3 - game(starters)
week 4 - scrimmage(starters for a half to fine-tune)

I do not want to see an 18-game season.

Of course fans hate it. It's boring. Fans have to be entertained, which is a big reason why there's been a bigger emphasis on creating a big play passing league.

I'd imagine though, coaches like the opportunity to evaluate players in live action. I could be wrong, but I'd leave the debate for preseason up to them.

I don't really care one way or another, but the argument for "increased chance of injuries" isn't very sound. They're going to play 16 games, if you don't want your starters playing in preseason for a few quarters then don't play them. Most starters only end up playing about one full game's worth of action in the preseason.

I like watching guys that are on the bubble, but that's just me.

I would love an 18 game regular season, with an extra bye. I think you have every teams bye come in week 5-6 and 12-13. Increase roster sizes by 5-10 players. Give the players more money. Everybody's happy :).
