Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman joined "The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley" on KESN-FM 103.3 on Monday and at one point the conversation turned to him almost coming out of retirement to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. This is how he told the story.

On the DeMarco Murray injury:

“If he has to wear a cast, I can’t imagine you’re going to be able to do something — if it’s a hard cast — where he can carry the ball in that hand. He’s had issues, as we know, already with fumbling the ball this year. I don’t think it could be where he could carry it in one arm. Emmitt Smith certainly did but it’s something that he always did.

If Murray says he can go, he can go. If he can't it will be evident early on. We'll do whatever is best for the team.

They made a glove that's padded on the back of his hand for protection. He's been catching with it and I'm assuming he's going to run and block as well. If he isn't able to, he won't play, according to the Cowboys and Garrett. They claim the most difficult function he'll be obliged to perform is the blocking, since you have to grasp their pads with the insides of your fingers. That will be painful, no doubt.

Let's assume blocking is not the main issue as he's not an OL guy.

For a game or 2..

he just needs to be able to run.

And still use his stiff arm.

He'll be fine.

I'm much more concerned with Luck completely torching our secondary.

That is where the game will be decided, boys.

Marinelli is going to have to get the defense rallied up here.

Go Boys.

picking up a blitz, etc by a RB the hands really are not a big factor; its placement of his body and preparing to take the impact that gives that QB the time he needs.

Luck also like to give gifts so I am not that worried

Emmitt fumbled the ball 5 times in 1999, the year he broke his hand. He had 329 carries and 27 receptions that season(356 touches). Murray has 5 fumbles this year. He also has 351 rushing attempts and 54 receptions(405 touches).

Murray has not fumbled in 6 straight games also.

The blocking requirement isn't a product of my creative imagination but rather, it's one that was mentioned by the Cowboys' staff as being a prime requirement that is an expectation of the Cowboys' staff to decide whether or not DeMarco will be allowed to play or not vs. Indy. I'm merely expressing a message laid out by the staff of the team we'll be pulling for Sunday afternoon. If they're OK with his performance, so am I as well.

It's not whether he says he can go or not. I don't want him our there if he can't block or secure the ball regardless of what he says.

Same here. This shouldn't be about one guy. If Randle and Dunbar can't share the load and be respectable, they shouldn't be on the roster.

Agree, but I think it's up to the coaches to make sure the get some because I'm confident they can do it.
