Troy Aikman: 'Unless practices change,' Cowboys may not win a title in another 20 years either

"I don't know," said Aikman. "This team, for 20 years, really has been so inconsistent. And unless practices change, I don't see that changing any time soon. You look back at last year and 12-4 and get excited about that, but was 12-4 really what this team is or is 8-8? I don't think 4-12 is this year because of the injuries that occurred.

"But you've got to do it more than once every seven or eight years before you can say, 'Hey, the things that we're doing are really paying off.' It's been a long history of frustration and up-and-down years, and, for the most part, disappointment.

"And I think you've got to be able to look back on something and say, 'OK, we're building something here and these things that we do pay off,' but I haven't seen that, so I don't anticipate any time soon anything being any different from what we've seen the last 20 years."

Troy Aikman talking crap about the Cowboys? What else is new.

And of course...he can never describe in any detail what is going on in practice.

I can tell you that I spoke to one of Troy's former teammates a few years ago and that's what he used to sell me *on* Garrett. His style of practicing was far better than Wade's according to this player.

It's also funny that 'you are what you are' when you have a poor record, but when you go 12-4 you're 'really an 8-8 team.'

Go figure.

And no...injuries can't be blamed for going 4-12. You're only in a QB driven league and a passing game league and you lose your star QB and star WR for the year. Nah, can't be a problem at all. Must be about practice.

It would be a refreshing change to see this organization stop playing catch up and stop trying to copy other successful teams and finally develop a real plan of success and stick to it.

Jerry has been doing this for years. It's a copycat league and each year a new team comes into the spotlight with a new formula and then we chase our version of creating that for a season....

Going all in on pass rush last year was a reaction to 1 game in Greenbay.
This year we will probably go all in on QB to avoid this seasons failures.
Next year it will be something else that fell apart or failed and we will spend the offseason going "balls out" fixing this hole.

Yakuza, I think he was refering to personnel and scheme configurations.

Last season was a tough one for the team. The give and take between the offense was not nearly equal. The offense quit scoring and the defense couldn't get a turnover. I easily see your point. But with both Dez and Tony in the mix...healthy, the offense can be a true strength.

But the defense doesn't yet carry a top team's load yet.

Having watched the movement from a cap strapped and low talent low of five seasons ago, I see progress...but as to final goals, I think he is right in the team needs to gain considerable ground and not with just positional journeymen.

For me, it's either fix the defensive line, secondary, or get a top of the line offensive producer.

I don't think he meant what was going on in the daily athletic practices....I think he meant the internal front office practices of the Cowboys , ie. how they run the organization.

Yeah, that's what I got. He's basically saying the 20 year draught is due to overall mistakes and poor management and that there has to be a shift in how they think and do things or this stuff will just continue to repeat itself.

He also didn't say they were an 8-8 team. He asked the question, which many here have asked, is this team really a 12-4 quality franchise or did they just have that one magic season and are really nothing more than an 8-8 franchise. It's a valid question to ask.

They've been drafting high for the trenches the last few years. So there is that.

Any time someone from the media writes something negative about the Cowboys one of the first few comments is always how that media member is one of the least credible sources out there and anything they say should be dismissed.

Who am I too believe? Mickey Spags?

Yes. He's always right. Just ask him.

Tom Landry said it best:

"Setting a goal is not the main thing. It is deciding how you will go about acheiving it and staying with that plan."

....Staying with that plan. That's the Cowboys problem. No matter how well its implemented, its just a matter of time before Jerry Jones reacts to a specific circumstance and deviates from the plan, thus weakening it and eventually destroying it.

The "right kind if guys"....Greg Hardy?

"Obtaining proper value in the draft"...Morris Claiborne?
