Champ Could See Austin’s Talent

You might think Denver cornerback Champ Bailey had an easy time against the Cowboys in the Broncos’ win last October.

For it was the All-Pro cornerback making a pivotal interception in the third quarter, while covering Miles Austin near the end zone, and then Bailey stopped two slant passes to Sam Hurd to preserve the win in the final seconds.

But when asked here Saturday about covering Austin that day, Bailey said the talent was always there.

“Oh yeah, I noticed him when we played against them in the preseason a couple of years ago,” Bailey said of Austin. “He wasn’t quite there yet. But you could see right away that this guy has a lot of talent. He’s really big, fast, strong and runs good, hard routes. I remember seeing him across the field when we were practicing against them and asking people about him. From a distance, he looked like he was going to be really good. And now he is.”

However, even Bailey said he couldn’t have imagined that Austin would blow up into a 1,300-yard receiver that scored 11 touchdowns. Better yet, he never thought he’d be playing against him like he will Sunday in the Pro Bowl. “No, I don’t think I can say that,” Bailey said.

“You knew he was good, but I don’t even think (the Cowboys) thought he’d be this good. But you just never know with guys like that. They have all the tools in the world and all they need now is a chance. And the Cowboys gave him that chance and look where he is.”

In fact, some could argue that it was Bailey’s teammate – Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams who also contributed. For it was Williams who smashed Roy Williams over the middle in that game, bruising his ribs and forcing Roy to miss the next start. That next start just happened to be in Kansas City, where Austin took full advantage, catching 10 passes for 250 yards and the game-winning score.

“Yeah, I didn’t think about that,” Bailey said. “Yeah, that play probably changed their whole season.”

If not even more than that.

I thought Austin should have received one of those slant route throws in the Denver game because he beat the DB so bad Romo could have lobbed the ball to him almost.

For the rest of my life I will never forget being at that game and watching Austin's performance. Simply amazing!

I think at this point everyone on this board accepts this is true.

The question now is keep him for one more year or put him on the auction block to see if we get any bites.

I'd suggest we keep him since we have already guaranteed all of next season's money and there is no one better to take his spot on the roster. At the end of TC, maybe my opinion will be different. Right now, the WR cupbaord is bare beyond RW, Austin, Crayton and Ogletree.
Hurd is just a ST player.

Aside from Oakland, who would take on that contract?

We could work out the part that we already guaranteed since that part is money down the drain.

RW could do a renegotiation if we sent him to a team he liked.

Anyhow, I was just throwing that idea out there.

He probably should be cut in TC next year but I think Jerry wants to give him one more chance to turn it around.

The only thing that would make amends (if RW can't turn it around) is if Jerry has found us another 1000 yard WR in KO as a UDFA.

Since Roy Williams' contract does not remove all off-season options at the position, it is highly doubtful that the front office has (or will) entertain that particular question for 2010. "Possible?" Yes. Very few things are impossible involving NFL player replacement and acquisition. "Practical?" No.

You could insert any number of NFL wide receivers in place of Roy Williams and the statement would still be correct.
