Indications now are that the Titans, who have the No. 3 pick in the first round, likely will pick Texas quarterback Vince Young, passing on Matt Leinart if he's still on the board, despite Leinart's past with Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, a former Trojans assistant coach, and coach Jeff Fisher's infatuation with Leinart. General manager Floyd Reese, who'll make the final decision, prefers Young.

If Jay Cutler slips to No. 9, the Vikings might be inclined to offer their No. 17 selection and one of their two second-round picks to the Lions in order to draft him at that spot. That is because there's a decent chance that Dennis Green's Cardinals will take Cutler with their No. 10 pick

The Jets' interest in Jay Cutler remains high, so much so that they're in discussions with the Ravens to try to obtain him with the 13th pick overall, according to a person who has been in contact with several NFL teams and has first-hand knowledge of strategy in the top portion of the NFL Draft.

The Jets have no plans to draft Matt Leinart, Vince Young or Jay Cutler. Barring some veteran smoke-screen work by Mike Tannenbaum and Eric Mangini, it appears almost certain the Jets will not take a quarterback that high. It's widely believed they will draft a QB from the so-called second tier of available bodies, with hopes of finding a gem out of the first round.

Don't be surprised if the Jets take Alabama's Brodie Croyle, Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst or Oregon's Kellen Clemens in one of the later rounds of Saturday's NFL Draft.

An NFL source said the Packers and Broncos recently discussed the availability of disgruntled Green Bay wide receiver Javon Walker.

All along, the Packers have thought Brett Favre would return for another season, but they were continually put off when asking for a final decision. Mike McCarthy, the Packers' new coach, worked with Favre in 1999 as quarterbacks coach and used a low-key approach in urging him to come back. McCarthy wanted a decision no later than the start of minicamp May 5-7 because that will be the first time the entire team will be together under his command.

If Ricky Williams had won his substance abuse policy appeal, the Dolphins had planned to offer him around the league in trade. Williams will be suspended for at least the entire 2006 season. Williams can't apply for reinstatement until after the entire 2006 season is completed. That means the Dolphins' running back also is not eligible for the playoffs. That doesn't mean Williams, who returned last season after retiring in 2004, will not play again. He issued a statement through the team saying he planned another comeback.

Despite persistent rumors that they have been in contact with the Saints (No. 2 overall) and the Jets (No. 4) as part of a three-way deal that would move them up to No. 2, two well-placed NFL sources have confirmed that the Raiders have not made specific inquiries to move up in the order and that they are content, for now, to stick with the No. 7 pick.

Despite recent revelations that Reggie Bush's family possibly received free or below-market rent on an expensive San Diego-area home during his USC days, the Texans apparently still want him.

The Steelers have, as the defending Super Bowl champion, the final selection of the first round and need a versatile wideout to replace Antwaan Randle El, who signed with the Commanders as a free agent, so Sinorice Moss perhaps could be an option for them. Moss said he received plenty of attention from the Chicago Bears during the pre-draft evaluation process.

If the Jaguars want to find Fred Taylor's eventual replacement, this appears to be an ideal year to do it. Scouts say this weekend's NFL Draft is so full of talented running backs that as many as five could be chosen in the first round. Could one of them wind up with the Jaguars at the 28th overall choice? Team officials aren't ruling it out, even though they have taken a running back in the first four rounds each of the past three years.

Marvin Lewis hinted Tuesday that, depending on the players available this weekend in the draft, the Bengals would consider changing their base defense to a 3-4. The team has used a defensive scheme with four linemen and three linebackers since Lewis arrived three seasons ago.

NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue said Tuesday the next few weeks will be "pivotal" in deciding whether the league, absent from the nation's No. 2 television market for more than a decade, makes a return to Los Angeles. Two sites are in the running, the Coliseum and Anaheim. It remains unclear whether the league is poised to pick one site or both, or pick one now and reserve another for later, or put two teams in one stadium.

Will Ford Field in Detroit be home for Charles Rogers in 2006? There are no guarantees he will be back for his fourth season in Detroit. The Lions have filed a grievance, seeking to reclaim about $10 million of Rogers' $14.4 million rookie signing bonus. The players union claims new provisions of the collective bargaining agreement prevent teams from taking such action.

The Giants are still interested in free-agent defensive tackle Brentson Buckner, but have put off any discussions with him until after the draft.

LaVar Arrington's first day as a Giant was a long one that began badly. With teammate Antonio Pierce accompanying him on the ride from the D.C. area to East Rutherford on Monday, Arrington was ready to get to work immediately. Except his BMW 760 wasn't. The car broke down, leaving the two linebackers stranded for more than two hours.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has invested only three first-day picks on pass protectors and run blockers in 10 years here. So even if the Ravens' offensive line is due for a shake-up, don't expect Newsome to draft a lineman with either of his two current picks Saturday.

Suspended Vikings running back Onterrio Smith has been notified by the NFL that he will not be reinstated next month, according to a source close to Smith. Last June, Smith was suspended one year for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, and he checked himself into a three-month, live-in rehabilitation facility in Massachusetts shortly thereafter.
