Trying isn't good enough

And they very well may do that.

Just the fact that they traded away Parsons shows they have a basic understanding of the roster deficits.

To trade up would be counterintuitive to that philosophy.
Not sure I follow

Trading Parsons shows, glaringly, that they were completely unaware that the pass rush was abysmal without him. Our lowest sack total in over a decade and only avoiding a teeny year slide by Clowney going crazy in a two game stretch with some forgetful stat padding sacks

I may be right there wringing my hands just like you are on opening weekend. But it’s too early for that right now. Let’s see how the Cowboys fill out this roster before opening weekend.
You have to see the irony in this comment.

It not you, then another half dozen regulars make that same comment every single year and have done so since the last century.

Unfortunately the Jerry and Stephen organizational mindset goal is the direct opposite of this OP.

That's why "trying and hanging around the rim" is the absolute best that can be achieved unfortunately.

And the never ending GroundHog Day type mediocrity will continue.

I believe things are different this season. If you don’t that’s fine. But aren’t you worried about something that hasn’t happened yet.

If you believe that this season will not be any different than the past 30 years, and have no hope that things will be different, then why follow the team or waste your time here on a Cowboys message board?

Which is why they need to trade down, not up.
I am very much on the trade down bandwagon. Handful of great players then it's pretty wide open. Trade down and you could get an Allen, Proctor, or Mesidor out of the first round and then use the extra 2/3 to grab a CB and S.

Because I’m a fan?

I attended blacked out cowboy games

Hell, no, they don't deserve credit for trying. They missed out on a good LB over 2 million dollars IIRC. All teams spend more on FAs than they want to. That's just the game.
Like an auction. It’s sold to the highest bidder.

Before this very important off-season began, our owner/GM stated once again publicly that they were willing to “break the bank” to add talent to this roster. Halfway through the 2026 off-season that has not happened.

And both JJ and SJ continue to tell the fan base they “tried” to acquire a top edge rusher and FA LB but the prices were “too high”. (Side note: NFL truth - The best talent out there is not coming here for less money. You have to overpay. Sorry sad truth)

So…as fans…are we now supposed to give our FO “credit” just for trying to sign or trade for a big impact player? But the price was too high? We didn’t get it done, but “we tried”? Seems to me in professional sports credit is earned when you do it, not when you simply try.

That’s especially true IMO with a front office that does a ton of talking but rarely back it up. And the only way we heard they tried so hard is they tell us all the time…without getting it done.

I think it’s fair for Cowboys fans to say at this point, “Don’t tell us what you’re planning or hoping to do. Show us what you've done.” Otherwise stop talking. Talk when it’s done.

This FO should not get the benefit of the doubt with the track record they have given us for decades.

The beginning of this post says it all. Jerry has that desire to do what Jimmy did, but I don’t get the impression that winning at all costs is on the agenda of Stephen Jones.

He can’t shut his mouth, and it’s clear that business over football is the priority in his mind. He would never admit it if asked, because even he isn’t that stupid or arrogant, but that man has zero burning desire to win. It’s all business. Winning would be great, but we aren’t taking the necessary type of risks, even though that’s how Jerry got here in the first place.

Overpaying for a player, whose value is fully determined by the very unqualified him, wouldnt be wise in a business sense.

Some of you will tell me I’m wrong, but as the value of the team continues to rise as the on the field futility continues, what other conclusion can one draw?
There may be some truth to what you say. I’ve always thought that Jerry wants to win. His biggest flaw being that it has to be his way. But the more Stephen has gotten involved the more things changed. And not for the better.

Nothing is different. Pickens is in pretty much in the same position Micah was.

We added no significant FA's.

In 2031 you will still be here preaching the exact same message. Only thing that will be different is 30 years changing to 35 years.

That is the great thing about competitive sports. There is no debate as to who the victor is. There is no ambiguity.

There is no voting. opinions don't matter.

In a football game, there is the winner and there is the loser with the very rare exception of neither.

The point is the results are there for everyone to see.

Therefore, the game itself is not the only efforts of a professional football team for which this precise measurement applies. It applies just as much to the efforts of management and coaching.

GMs and Head Coaches do not keep their positions based on good intentions, current complications or "bad luck". You win, you stay. You lose, you go.

......With one exception in this league.

The Dallas Cowboys are handicapped by circumstances that severely detriment and to this point prohibit the success of the team and franchise.

They are operated by executives that are fundamentally unqualified to successfully perform the duties of their assigned positions. They lack the experience, knowledge and, most importantly, the competitive success of their genuine counterparts.

The credentials of NFL GM's involve a 20 year career starting at the bottom and being elevated through each level based on prior success. It can begin as an assistant scout. It can begin as a player.

In any case, the fact is the same. They competed against other assistant scouts, senior scouts, regional directors, assistant Directors of Personnel, Directors of Personnel, and assistant GMs. They were the ones left standing.

Why? Because they succeeded.....up to this point.

It never ends, you are as good as the results on the field by your team.

Eventually, they fall. You can't stay at the top forever. That is the law of competitive sports. Success must be current. It is the winners of today who are celebrated. GMs can't rely on history forever to justify their positions.

......with one exception in this league.

And when he is gone? Will it be two exceptions in this league?
