4. Next man in Big D

Jason Garrett will be the Cowboys' coach next season.

With Dallas piling up victories (until Week 6, of course) with a surprisingly dynamic offense, it's inevitable that Garrett, its offensive coordinator, will top the 2008 list of head-coaching candidates.

There's only one way for owner Jerry Jones to prevent Garrett from leaving.

Before Sunday, I thought Jones might come up with a way to overpay Garrett and work out a Gregg Williams-style deal that would entail a balloon payment if Garrett is not the successor to Wade Phillips whenever Phillips walks away. But after watching Phillips take a team that is every bit as talented as the Patriots and yet lose by 21 points, I now think Jones will fire Phillips after one season and give the head coaching gig to Garrett.

The clincher for me was Phillips' inexplicable decision to take three points while facing fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line and trailing by 14. Real Cowboys don't go soft in such circumstances; they go for glory. When Phillips waffled, he proved to Jones that he doesn't have the killer instinct Jones covets.

Promoting Garrett also could help persuade quarterback Tony Romo to take less money to stay. It is under Garrett's guidance that Romo became elite quarterback. But that's a collateral benefit. Unless Phillips changes his ways -- and parlays that change into a victory over the Patriots in a February rematch -- his chances of returning are slim.

I love Garrett, however, I am not sure even if he called all the shots Sunday it would have mattered......he cannot stop the refs!

Florio is great at breaking news stories, but terrible at any sort of football analysis. He should stick to the former.

The only thing I do worry about from this article is how are we going to keep Garrett on the staff

What?!?

And funny, I didn't know Romo was "elite" yet. That last braindead INT he threw wasn't Brady- or Manning-esque.

So unless we win the Superbowl, Wade is fired? :laugh2:

I think that would be a dumb move, and I like Jason Garrett.

Believe it or not, I am of the opinion that if Garrett gets a great opportunity to be a head coach somewhere else, Dallas can plug in Sparano and Ray Sherman and keep right on moving. I think those guys would do a fine job with this offense too...

But all of this is still a long ways off.

This guy is on drugs.

So....

  • Garrett has all of 2 years of any sort of coaching experience
  • his first as an actual offensive coordinator which many said would be too much for him to handle
  • was handed the keys to an already very potent offense
  • and was basically tutored by Norv Turner

Now he suddenly has the stuff to be a head coach? Here's hoping he didn't study too hard under Norv.

This smacks of someone who watched their first Cowboys game of the season last Sunday.

Phillips has taken calculated risks all season long.

you forgot

"Real Cowboys don't go soft in such circumstances; they go for glory. When Phillips waffled, he proved to Jones that he doesn't have the killer instinct Jones covets."

right, that's Jerry for ya, the tough guy. I'm sure he's gonna fire Wade for going for a field goal in a week 6 game.

Isn't Florio the guy who runs Profootballtalk.com?

Yes, .. I know the guy. Please, don't pause to consider anything he says.

He is a lawyer in Clarksburg, WV. He is no NFL guy.

He has a web site, he reads the internet like you and me.

At least that is how he started out, I do think he is meeting some people now.

And he is making money from all of this, so good for him.

But he speculates about most things, as you know.

Just know this, he is a Steelers fan and hates the Cowboys. Anything he could say to rile up Cowboys fans would make him laugh.

I think this guys is dead on....I think we have won games moreso because of the offense than the defense...I don't think this team is ANY better defensivley than we were at the end of last year...I think kicking a FG Sunday wreaked of EGO.....why Wade thought we could stop them 2 MORE times is just stupid....once Wade puts his ego aside and realizes that this defense is not going to get that much better, I think he will go to Garret and tell him to let off the gas some so his defense can get some rest...I think we will then start to run the ball more. But WE CANNOT lose Garett this off season for a coach on the wrong side of 60...and at this point is heading a defense that is no better than the defense we had at the end of last year

I was never big on Phillips-- but saying that up until now he's done a terrific job. However not going for the first down in that situation is a real head-scratcher. And then him justifying the type of defense we were playing against the Pats (stop the run) just mystifies me.

Not to defend this piece, but he often references NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, in certain posts. I believe he's alot more dialed in now than when he first put up his website. Especially now that NFL.com is actually a sponsor of his site. He gets a certain amount of credibility for some info.

I think that was a general statement. His thing all season long has been about stopping the run and getting pressure. Got a bit of pressure, but the secondary wasn't holding up its end.

Right, .. that's why I added, ... "He has a web site, he reads the internet like you and me.

I have seen him interviewed on Pittsburgh Sports shows too.
Plus, he is making money, so good for him.

But living in WV is not exactly a hot-bed for professional football, especially since we don't even had a pro sports team.

This part makes sense. Everything else in the article is nonsense.
