4. Next man in Big D
Jason Garrett will be the Cowboys' coach next season.
With Dallas piling up victories (until Week 6, of course) with a surprisingly dynamic offense, it's inevitable that Garrett, its offensive coordinator, will top the 2008 list of head-coaching candidates.
There's only one way for owner Jerry Jones to prevent Garrett from leaving.
Before Sunday, I thought Jones might come up with a way to overpay Garrett and work out a Gregg Williams-style deal that would entail a balloon payment if Garrett is not the successor to Wade Phillips whenever Phillips walks away. But after watching Phillips take a team that is every bit as talented as the Patriots and yet lose by 21 points, I now think Jones will fire Phillips after one season and give the head coaching gig to Garrett.
The clincher for me was Phillips' inexplicable decision to take three points while facing fourth-and-goal from the 5-yard line and trailing by 14. Real Cowboys don't go soft in such circumstances; they go for glory. When Phillips waffled, he proved to Jones that he doesn't have the killer instinct Jones covets.
Promoting Garrett also could help persuade quarterback Tony Romo to take less money to stay. It is under Garrett's guidance that Romo became elite quarterback. But that's a collateral benefit. Unless Phillips changes his ways -- and parlays that change into a victory over the Patriots in a February rematch -- his chances of returning are slim.
