Tubby Smith Heading To Minnesota

Tubby Smith is leaving Kentucky to coach Minnesota despite four years left on his Wildcats contract, Andy Katz reports. In 10 seasons at Kentucky, Smith never missed the Big Dance and his team won the 1998 title.

As a gator fan im sad. I dont like seeing good coaches leaving the SEC. Kentucky basketball fans remind me of alabama football fans, their expectations are totally unrealistic. Terrible move for Kentucky. Great hire for Minnesota.

I heard on ESPN that this is the longest Kentucky has ever gone without going to the final four. Tubby won his title with Petino's players. Maybe he's a little overated.

Rumor has it they've contacted Rick Barnes about the position

Bad move if you ask me, Barnes is a great recruiter, but a poor Xs and Os guy

That seemed to be Tubby's problem, he wasn't able to recruit enough top level guys that Kentucky was used to getting.

I personally thinks he never should have left Georgia. And I think Gillespie should stay at Texas A&M. In 10-15 years they could be naming their arena after him.

I would much rather try and become an icon at a school like Georgia or A&M, than just try and become another link in the chain at a school like Kentucky or Kansas.

Somebody had to turn those schools into what they are now. I would rather see if I could do the same thing with my program.

I've heard Izzo, but that makes no sense because he is from Mich St. Other names out there are Mark Few, Donovan, a few other names. They need a name guy, but I am not sure they are going to get one with the local backlash Smith was under.

i heard that too, but i actually think billy makes more sense as a legit candidate.

i can't imagine barnes goes this far building texas to just walk away, whereas billy is just starting.

i hope both stay. i want the big 12 to be a major power.
