DD Tuesday Morning: North Practice:

Sun was shining, and favorable weather continued for this morning's practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

San Jose State defensive end #94 Justin Cole replaced injured Wisconsin defensive end O'Brien Schofield on the roster. Cole spent more time working with the linebackers then with the ends.

Offense:

Central Washington quarterback #13 Dan Lefevour threw a catchable ball and was the most effective of the North signal callers.

Wayne State running back #25 Joique Bell hit the hole with authority and had several long gains. Bell is raising his profile.

Oregon running back #9 Legarrette Blount ran tough and often delivered the blow to the defenders.

Virginia running back #31 Rashawn Jackson was active in blitz pickup and ready to hit.

Clemson wide receiver #8 Jacoby Ford had an excellent diving catch and was a popular target. Ford and Cincinnati wide receiver #1 Marty Gilyard worked at punt returner.

Wisconsin tight end #89 Garrett Graham and Oregon tight end #83 Ed Dickson were reliable targets with good hands and yard after catch ability.

Idaho guard #77 Mike Iupati dominated opposing pass rushers and had at least 2 pancake blocks. Showed rare foot speed and can recover if off balance.

Arizona State guard #67 Shawn Lauvao displayed top technique: good hands, feet and base. Less than ideal size but a player.

Defense:

Arkansas State defensive end #96 Alex Carrington impressed in the Pit, with bull and swim moves. Carrington has a rare size speed combo and teams have noticed.

Michigan defensive end #55 Brandon Graham put on a clinic; makes rushing the passer look easy.

Murray State defensive end #97 Austen Lane showed a quick first step and was often able to penetrate upfield.

Cal defensive end #44 Tyson Alualu was smart, saavy and had a high motor. Like Graham, he can also make plays despite less than ideal height.

Penn State defensive tackle #91 Jared Odrick had an up-and-down session. Odrick can blow up the play one down, and be on the ground the next.

Washington linebacker #9 Donald Butler was aggressive and quick; He penetrated on running downs and covered well on backs and tight ends. TCU linebacker #41 Daryl Washington was also sticky in coverage.

Due to inconsistant quarterback play, it was difficult to scout the wide receivers and defensive backs. Still, Rutgers cornerback #21 Devin McCourty and Boise State #1 Kyle Wilson got in and out of breaks well. McCourty had a nice deflection in drills.

***
Murray State defensive end Austen Lane made a Senior Bowl diary entry.

***
TCU linebacker Daryl Washington was impressive in North practice.

Dan Lefevour went to Central MICHIGAN: fire up Chips! And Brandon Graham from UofM will be a LB in the mold of Lamar Woodley of Pittsburgh: dude can bring it big time...Cowboys should look at him too..........

If Brandon Ghram slides to 3rd round Cowboys should pounce on him. I htik he is better than Lamar Woodley coming out of college. He was the sole D player on MIchigan D last year, but still couldn't stop him.

SInce cowboys don't need an outside LB, I would be hesitant to pull the trigger on him 2nd round, but I have feeling he might go high second round to late 1st round, probably Chargers.

I know lots of fans want Iupati, but with all the buzz surrounding him, I think he's rocketing up the board, giving us no shot at him.

It seems that way, but guards do drop it seems... the best thing for us (if we are targeting him) is that he didn't look good at LT...

FWIW, Drew Boylhart (thehuddlereport.com) thinks that he's way overrated, and that he has a very limited upside. While he thinks Iupai is a dominant blocker once he gets his hands on an opponent, he thinks he has some severe athletic limitations to impact at the next level, and won't be anything more than a right guard. Drew doesn't think he even has the footwork and pass blocking ability to be a left guard. He rates him as a 4th rd talent. Don't shoot the messenger, just passing on what was written by someone who's opinion I highly value, and so do the mods here that have invited him for pre-draft talks each year.

I want Jacoby Ford. Or even Jordan Shipley. Someone new and young to play the slot would not hurt us.

I'm really starting to lean towards Pouncey, the C/G from Florida, he would be perfect for us.

Mike Iupati is the new Larry Allen folks... Dallas would be foolish to pass on him. He might be a LT as well with those long arms. Brandon Graham is going to be a stud for a 3-4 team like the Ravens or Jets.

I agree, especially if he has a good showing at the combines.

Good news is that this seems like a pretty deep draft for olinemen and will drop some of the other quality olinemen right to our laps for every spot he climbs up the draft board.

No one's perfect ;)

But as much as I would love to get Iupati (I've been campaigning for him for at least a couple weeks it seems), I do think he is overrated. I still think he's a 1st rounder though, but some people act like he's the next Larry Allen. He's not. He still has the potential to be an elite guard though IMO.

Can't remember the last time we did. I don't think any one's mentioned it, but what if we traded up for Unger last April?

Everyone seems to be in agreement he was our # one target in rd two. Perhaps he makes a difference in Min.

Last I heard he was doing well in Seattle.

I'm usually in favor of letting the draft come to you. Don't obsess over any particular player. Hold your ground, let the BPAs come to you. If no player makes sense or looks like good value, trade down.

We've done a lot of that in recent years and it's safe. It's also worked more often than not for us.

But were too close this year and our OL need is too strong. IMO we almost have to come away with two quality OL prospects on day one. Just don't want to see the next Unger slip away.
