Former New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells endorses the signing of Chris Canty

Chris Canty was sitting there on the open market, waiting to be had by any team that wanted him. So it would seem likely the Dolphins, with ex-Dallas coach Bill Parcells running the show down in Miami, would be in the running for the ex-Cowboy.
"What you really want to know is why we weren't interested in him, right?" Parcells told our Paul Needell yesterday during a brief phone conversation.
Yep, Parcells, who also coached the Giants, Jets and Patriots, has been around for a while, so he knows what the media wants: a full report on Canty, who signed a 6-year, $42-million with the Giants on Sunday. And, yes, the reason why the Dolphins didn't chase Canty.
"Well, we drafted three defensive linemen last year and signed two free-agent linemen," Parcells said. "We filled our needs then."
If Parcells needed a lineman, he surely would have gone after Canty.
"Oh, Chris is a really good kid," Parcells said. "He's smart, works hard, has great size. Of course, he played end for us but rushed the passer inside. I wouldn't see why he wouldn't have a huge upside for them. He played for Al (Groh in college at Virginia) and me, so he knows what Tom (Coughlin) will expect."
Parcells indicated he doesn't expect Canty to have any issues moving inside in the Giants' 4-3 defense. He also said Canty's character is very good. And the barroom incident from a few years ago in which Canty suffered an eye injury when he was struck by a stray bottle (an unprovoked toss not intended for him) isn't a concern for Parcells. Mike Francesa on WNBC's "Mike'd Up" and a few other commentators have mentioned it and the arrests of Boley and Bernard on charges of assault over the past few years as red flags.
"Why would it be (a concern)? It wasn't his fault. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time," Parcells said. "He was never any problem for us. Like I said, he's a great kid."
Parcells went on to commend the Giants' signing of defensive tackle Rocky Bernard on Saturday.
"You know, that other kid, Rocky Bernard, is a pretty good player, too," Parcells told Needell, who hadn't even asked him about Bernard. "We had to play him a few times (in Dallas) and always had our hands full. He'll do a good job for them, too."
