Turpin wants to fix the Cowboys' return game

It's very simple, Turpin ... catch the ball, see the hole, hit the hole full speed and don't stop or slow down.

He has such great speed yet he spends most of his returns at speeds slower than NFL lineman can run because he's thinking and hesitating way too much.

I'm thinking this is by design, though. We're letting him pick his hole instead of designing the return to create a lane.

Some of the best returns against us last year were those that clearly had an attack plan for creating a specific hole for the returner to attack. I think just because you have a speedy returner who is a big play waiting to happen, not having a clear plan of attack makes him hesitate too much looking for a big play.

This is part of the reason I don't care for Sorenson. Great special team coaches aren't just coaching players on how to block, they are designing schemes to take advantage of the opponent.

There are two problems with that ..

1) It hasn't produced great results, just average results.

2) Turpin's speed is his advantage. When he slows down, even if trying to find that perfect lane to run in and letting the blocks fall into the place, what he's doing is giving the coverage team ample time to see where he is, where he is going and adjust their coverage to stop him. Right now, it's him against 11 players. If he were to pick a hole and hit it fast it would be him against 5 to 6 players max. Even if it fails, I gurantee that it would produce huge runs at a rate much better than the mediocre results he's getting right now on most returns.

I would gladly take some 10-15 yard returns on kickoffs if it offered at least one 40+ yard return 3-5 kickoff returns.

I 100% agree.

It's up to the ST coach to change that, though. If the plan is, Hey, Turpin, you pick the hole, then he's naturally going to hesitate and look at his options because you don't want to run into a closed hole. There needs to be a plan of attack by the ST coordinator with maybe A & B holes, so that Turpin isn't waiting to survey from sideline to sideline, looking for his best option. It needs to be like the running game, where you have where the run is planned but options off of that. Right now, I think it's just you pick a hole and that's just not good coordination. It's like giving a QB too many audibles.
 
I won't put it all on him, we could have definitely done a better job of blocking things up. The new kickoff rules lead me to believe he's not of the right body type, 150-160lbs. I don't think it's big enough to get through the "wash" as they call it. I think this may be an opportunity for Blue to put his foot in the door. The explosion is there in a larger body.

That's probably because every time he makes a decision, the hole he was going to run through gets filled, thanks to poor blocking. I agree, he seems indecisive at times, but he also seems unsure of his blockers, and rightfully so.

You have a point and frankly our whole special teams play was pretty bad.

I am quite surprised that Shotty hasn't addressed that with a coaching change.

Back to Turpin, his play on offense was nothing but mediocre. He seemed to have a lot of dropped passes.

That's going to happen often no matter what, but a lot of those holes are open for that 1-2 second period that he could have flown through had he ran full speed.

They only closed because he slowed down and waited and the coverage team had time to adapt their coverage.

How many times do we see running backs take the ball and just blast through the line without hesitation and it turn into a 20+ yard run? If they waited an extra second that hole would have likely closed either by a linebacker or stunting lineman.

It's okay accept that sometimes that hole is just not going to be there and it's going to mean a shorter than average run because every few runs a hole that would not have lasted long enough for a thinking/hesitating runner to get through stayed open long enough for the runner to blow through it running full speed before anyone realized it.

Shotty is incapable of addressing anything. Look at the putrid defense. No answer all season. That guy is not a serious coach.
 
I would prefer working hard on our coverage teams as they were LOUSY
