OXNARD, Calif. — Training camp in Oxnard officially wrapped up on Thursday afternoon, as the Cowboys will travel to Seattle this weekend for their second of three preseason contests before returning home to finish off the backend of camp.
Thursday's final session also included offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and special teams coordinator John Fassel catching up with the media to discuss the 89 guys in the building at this point and the team's progression through the preseason.
Here were the highlights from the availability.
Turpin's job is safe, if there was any doubt
Coming into training camp, there was a small buzz on social media and in Oxnard about if KaVontae Turpin's roster spot was solidified with little offensive experience and another capable returner in Deuce Vaughn being in the building.

However, Fassel communicated to the media on Thursday that he expects Turpin to have an even bigger season in 2023 in the return game as he continues to also pick up a role offensively.
"I think Turp is the incumbent, for sure," Fassel said. "We have a Pro Bowl returner in Turp. I think he's become a much better punt catcher, even though I think he was very good at it before. He's special, I envision him being even more special this year than he was last year."
That being said, Fassel also sees potential for Deuce Vaughn and others in the return game, but it is Turpin's full-time job until further notice.
"I see him as the guy who's returning kickoffs and punts, and as Deuce continues to get some work, he'll be right there too to give us an extra guy," he said. "Going into the season, you always want at least two guys that can do it. I think we actually have more than two."

He'll make the team, IMO. But I would also want to get a look at guys like Cropper and Juanyeh Thomas returning. Joseph also returned to some degree.

Both of these players returned some in college, if I recall correctly.

If Turpin can figure out how to hang onto the ball, I'm all for it. But he really needs to work on that aspect of his game.

The one Saturday was a technique error that hopefully he'll correct. When you've got defenders on either side of you, you have to cover the ball with both hands. He didn't and it got punched out.

Turpin’s job is safe as long as he doesn’t keep putting the ball on the ground. He had a fumble last season as well. It won’t take long to forget about those two TDs he scored in preseason last year if he keeps making mistakes. They’re going to give him more opportunities at receiver this season so he has to learn to protect the football.

Three, actually. Two that were lost.

Agreed.

My guess is that Turp can afford one more in preseason, but if there's one more, he's genuinely going to be on the bubble if, in fact, Deuce hasn't fumbled any yet produces similar results. I know what they want us to believe they believe, and that their motivation is largely that they don't want a player to lose confidence... so Fassel nor anyone else is going to publicly get transparent... counterproductive.

He cannot afford two. He will be cut if he had 3 preseason fumbles to go with 3 fumbles in the last half of last season. My opinion. My strong opinion.

Turpin doesn’t want to make the Cowboys have to decide between two undersize players. They’ve had Vaughn fielding punts in practice and he was returning KO’s last week. He can do a lot of what Turpin is doing. The Cowboys didn’t invest a draft pick on Turpin. The quickest way for a player with a limited role to get cut is fumbling.

The only folks who ever doubted it were fans, no actual signs from FO.

Yes his fumble last week was disappointing, but dude was a Pro-Bowl starter (not an alternate) and was voted by players as a Players All-Pro. It’s not really hard to see why as he’s electric.

The guy hasn’t had an off-season in 2 years and said last year he came on too late to be ingratiated into the offense. He’s in his second year of NFL football on a cheap deal.

Those who actually thought he could be cut either ignored all the clear evidence, thought that you can’t have two short quick guys with Vaughn getting picked, or have some personal issue like the poster who called him a turd. He’s always been safe.

Only thing that could hurt him is fumbles but he’s never had an issue with that before so there’s not a huge panic yet.

Helping with mental health ... or just mental health?
Turp getting cut. I thought about it one time, lol. When someone had mentioned it. Other than that, never occurred to me that his job security was in jeopardy
