I am thinking about getting a pair of external speakers for my TV. The TV has on the back, Left and Right audio out for what looks like RCA jacks. Now my Blu-ray player also has these jacks. Which would be better to use? I want the speakers primarly for movies but would hooking them up to the player cut off audio for my Tv?

Also can anyone recomend a set of speakers that come "pre wired with jacks? The only one's I have seen on line so far are the type that take speaker wires clipped on the back.

Thank you
Cliff

I recommend going for a receiver and 5 piece speakers set with a subwoofer. The reciever doesn't have to be expensive, but it needs to be able to handle the speakers, and make sure HDMI out supports sound. (some don't) The speakers themselves you can spend a bit more on. They make the most difference.

Keep in mind though, you don't always need high end speakers to make a huge difference in your sound system when upgrading from a TV speaker.

My first one was a Yamaha Natural Sound 5-1 audio and it came with Yamaha speakers. It was easily 10x more than I could actually use in my apartment at the time. It was great stuff!

It depends on how much you want to spend and how long you want to keep your stero equipment. If you don't mind dropping a few grand I suggest going to a reputable home audio/video store and getting someone that will take time with you to sample various speaker/receiver combos.

If you're on a tighter budget I suggest getting a one box solution - something that has the receiver and speakers in one box. Here are the "home theater in a box" solution Newegg has:

call me stupid, but I was under the impression that HDMI was both the video and audio cable? So wouldn't one just be able to plug the HDMI from said BD Player into receiver and from the receiver take another HDMI into the tv?

Another option would be from BD player take the HDMI to the TV and an optical cable to the receiver...no?

That would work. But I really dont want to have to turn the reciever on to get TV sound. My living room is not large enough to warrent a full blown surround sound system. The HDMI I have hooked up from the Blu-Ray to the TV carries both audio and video (I think that's what it's for) If the DVD is hooked up to a reciever via optical cable for the speakers. Will the HDMI still carry a signal to the TV for normal viewing?

Thanks guy's.

Cliff, looking over that list on Newegg, I have a coupla recommendations:

If price is the big concern, I like the JVC system that goes for 200 bucks, or the Panasonic system that goes for 250... I have an old JVC receiver back in my bedroon (mated to a pair of Infinity bookshelf speakers) that has provided good sound for me for nearly 30 years now...

If space is an issue, I'd look at the Phillips system for 300 bucks, or if you can splurge a little, you'd do really well with the Bose 3-2-1 system for a grand... the Phillips is a subwoofer and what they call a "soundbar", just 2 pieces, the Bose system is a sub with two very small satellite speakers... nobody gets bigger sound from little speakers than Bose does...

Just my 2 cents worth...

Never have had Sony equipment, but lots of folks like them... from the reviews on that website, it sounds like it would be fairly easy to hook up, though a couple of the guys didn't care much for the bass output... me, I wouldn't care that much about the bass output, you're getting it mostly to watch movies and such, not to rock out with...

So for your purposes, it ought to work just fine... before you make your final decision, I'd advise you to check out the customer reviews of any system in there you might be interested in, you might be able to figure out which one comes closest to what you're looking for... only you can answer that...

Thanks for the help. I'm also thinking about a DVD/VCR recorder. And I just got finished putting together a new TV stand. This will never end LOL.

Even if you're on a budget, I'd recommend staying away from home theater in a box deals. You're always better off putting your own system together.

All HD players will support audio and video through the HDMI output, it's part of the spec. I'd recommend buying the receiver and speakers seperately though, for sure. You may want to look at a company like Onkyo for your receiver and personally I stay away from the big names when it comes to speakers (like Sony, JBL, etc), you'll want to look for companies that manely specialize in speakers like Aperion, Energy, Klipsch, Polk, etc.

I'm not a huge fan of Bose either, you can get better for the money in my opinion. If you're getting this for home theater use, you'll want to to plunk the majority of the money on the speakers, especially the subwoofer. A quality subwoofer can make the difference between an okay system and a great one.

To answer this question, you will need a receiver to power any sort of decent speaker system unless you are fine with a set of powered speakers like you might use for a PC.

You dont seem terribly interested in surround sound and all that jazz, so take a look at the Logitech Z2300. It's powered so you wont need a receiver. They will just plug into the RCA (red and white) jacks on your TV.

Also if you do get a receiver, it will have to be on to receive any video on your tv unless you bypass the receiver and connect the source directly to the tv.

I went this route. I purchased an Onkyo refurb with 4 Polk stand-up speakers, a Polk center channel and decent sub. I looked for deals and got it all under a grand. I love it.
