Jaguars rookie fell asleep at wheel on exit ramp

By The Times-Union

Jaguars rookie linebacker Justin Durant, who did not make the trip with the team to New Orleans, was arrested Saturday after being passed out behind the steering wheel of his vehicle at an exit ramp. Durant was cited for resisting an officer without violence and having an open container in his vehicle.

"I'm sorry I messed up,'' Durant said after he was handcuffed, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office police report.

Jaguars offensive lineman Richard Collier was also arrested Saturday morning in a separate incident and charged with driving under the influence. Both players were released from Duval County jail after bonding out.

Police observed Durant's 2007 Cadillac Escalade parked on the eastbound exit ramp to Atlantic Boulevard on Florida 9A at 4:30 a.m. Durant was in the driver's seat, but did not respond when police tapped on the window, which was partially open. Police unlocked the vehicle, grabbed Durant's arm and woke him, according to the police report.

The report said police asked Durant to exit the vehicle and detected an odor of alcohol on his breath. Durant resisted by grabbing the steering wheel and refusing to let go. After three attempts to get Durant to exit the car, an officer removed his taser from the holster and turned it on, according to the report.

Durant let go of the steering wheel and officers struggled to handcuff him because Durant initially would not place his hands behind his back, the report said.

After being placed in the back of the patrol car, Durant said, "I'm sorry I messed up.''

Police said they also observed a cup in the cupholder next to the driver's seat. When asked, Durant said the cup contained an alcoholic beverage, according to the report.

Durant underwent field sobriety tests and officers concluded he did not meet the criteria for DUI, the report said.

Durant, a second-round draft pick, had started two games this season and made 13 tackles.
