you don't think that extra person they let go wouldn't help or couldn't develop or couldn't contribute on special teams more than two kickers?

why don't we keep two punters. one that is a good directional punter and one that has good hang time?

This has nothing to do with Jerry, It has to do with the simple fact that Bailey sucks on Kickoffs, is a little better than avg on FG's. Beuhler is great on kickoffs, and avg and below on FG's. Both sections of the game matter (Check that Titan's game if you don't think so). so therefore the cowboys needed both kickers.

Maybe if we took a kicker in the 1st round we'd be golden. We seem to nail 1st round picks

Go back and watch Bailey's kickoffs in the preseason games and then tell me why his kickoffs suck. Thanks.

they were talking the new kick-off rule on sports radio (Michael Kay I believe) the other day and he was quoting some stats I found interesting. He said the avg. kick-off return last year started around the 8 or 9 yard line, meaning with the new rule, we could expect the avg. to be the 3 or 4.

I am not crazy about the 2 kicker thing and disappointed we couldn't find the kicking answer but Buehler still stands to be a unique weapon with almost all his kick-offs guaranteeing a touchback.

Under the previous rules, there was incentive to kick high and short vs. low and far because kicking low and far did not guarantee a touchback or better field position. Now, the chance of kicking out of the back of the endzone recalibrates the balance between the advantages of kicking high and short vs. low and far. Thus, there's not a 1 to 1 direct correlation in starting return position.

that is a good point - the rule is here to stay (at least for this year) so we'll get to see with our own eyes the ultimate impact.

also, I don't expect the Cowboys to carry 2 kickers all season and believe they'll make a move at some point to either consolidate 1 out of the picture or bring in someone else to replace both.

I just ran a correlation study of average starting position vs. total points and there's a very little correlation (.241 correlation coefficient).

I know someone has done a bit of a calculation of what the likely value is of each starting position on the field. I think starting at the 20 is actually a slightly negative value if I remember correctly. Starting inside the 5 is actually worth about -3 points, for example. Having a 1st and goal inside the 5 was worth about 5 points.

I'm not sure how to google the results but maybe someone out there does. I read about it almost 2 years ago.

So you can calculate Buehler's worth say on the basis of say 5 kickoffs per game and see what he would be worth for 6 yards of field position 5 times per game, for example.
