Two mock's to choose from

I'm going to do two mocks here. The first is what I see as more likely and more mainstream, so to speak, and doesn't have any trades. It is what I see as much more likely. The second involves a sizable trade back and would have the Cowboys pretty much sticking to their board and taking the best available player at each pick, regardless of needs. While unlikely... I do think it is possible.

Let me preface this by saying I think Dallas signs a guard in free agency. Someone who can come in and be a solid starter at one G spot. They have already signed Spencer at DE, so that position is no longer a need.

The first mock has Dallas getting relatively lucky with one of the guys they want at 18 actually making it to that spot:

First Mock:

1) Sheldon Richardson - DT, Missouri
2) Jonathan Cyprien - S, Fla International
3) Khaseem Green - OLB, Rutgers
4) Brian Winters - OG, Kent State
5) Tyrann Mathieu - DB, LSU
6) Michael Williams - TE, Alabama

Second Mock:

I see a possibility of the guys the Cowboys love being all gone by 18. Will it happen? I hope not. If it does though, I think Dallas trades back and if they trade back far enough, I can see getting a second for doing so.

That is the scenario I will mock here.

Houston, who feels like they are close and only need a couple of pieces to go all the way sees a guy like Cordarrelle Patterson sitting at 18 and trades their first and second picks to go up and add a difference maker to put across from Andre Johnson.

So, Dallas gives up 18 for the 27th pick in round 1 and the 25th pick (57 overall) in the second round.

That gives Dallas a first, two seconds, a third, fourth, fifth and sixth round pick. Dallas should have their choice from Sylvester Williams, Kawaan Short, Matt Elam, and a few others at that spot.

However going outside of the norm here, the Cowboys select:

1) Tavon Austin - WR, West VA
2) Matt Elam - S, Florida
2) Arthur Brown - LB, Kansas State
3) Bennie Logan - DT, LSU
4) Stepfan Taylor - RB, Stanford
5) Tyrann Mathieu - DB, LSU
6) Michael Williams - TE, Alabama

You will notice that I took Mathieu in the 5th round of both mocks. Yes he is a pet cat and yes he is small. However, the guy is a terrific football player and in the 5th he would be well worth the risk. Players gravitate towards him and he becomes the heart and soul of the defense. Football also gravitate towards him... the guy just makes plays. He isn't a RKG, but picked that late, he is well worth the risk. A natural DB who plays so instinctively that he makes everyone else look lethargic. Always a step ahead of everyone else. You can't teach that and it is a very rare commodity, and it's a big reason I want him on the team.

Maybe Les Miles and Morris Claiborne make a push for the Cowboys to draft Mathieu and convinces them to give him a try. Who knows, maybe even Jerome Henderson and Monte Kiffin put in a good word for the Honey Badger.

I can hope. :eek::

I also picked Williams TE in both mocks in the 6th. Hard to get good value that late and have the player stick... but this guy is very solid and with Dallas looking for a blocking TE, he would have a great chance to come in, make the team and contribute his rookie season.

Also, both mocks tend to be defense heavy. I think this year is so strong in safeties, DT's, and quick 43 OLB's, that my mocks tend to go that way if you are looking at BPA's.

Anyway, I'm sure a lot of people aren't crazy about either one, but it was a fun way to spend some spare time.

First draft would never happen cause pretty much every guy from round 2 down is projected to go an entire round earlier.

Second draft has an unreal trade as far as draft pick values go......just saying

Elam is not what they are looking for from a safety in this draft. They want someone with range who can play center field and be comfortable in single high safety type coverages.. Elam is more of a box safety..Good player but bad fit

Though I think it's unlikely to happen, I'd love that 1st mock.

As an aside, the Honey badger is this years Janoris Jenkins. I think whoever drafts him will get a bargain... And also a potential problem down the line.

Elam has more range than people give him credit for, but he is more of an in the box guy than some others.

Agreed.

I can't help but want the guy playing in Dallas though.

Not saying he doesn't have range but he doesn't have the type of range/coverage ability to fit properly with this scheme.

Guys like Vaccaro, Reid, Swearinger, Cyprien ETC. are better fits in my opinion.. not necessarily better players but better fits

Broaddus keeps hinting at hearing alot of negative stuff about Elam on Twitter. Wont elaborate.

I agree about Vaccaro, Swearinger and Cyprien being better for what Dallas wants. Reid, I am not a fan of. Saw a lot of him down here in SEC country (like I saw a lot of Elam) and he just never impressed me. Even hardcore LSU fans didn't think highly of Reid.

Elam, on the other hand impressed ever game.

I admit that Elam is a pet cat but I do like Cyprien and Swearinger a lot to. I also like S Thomas from Syracuse in the 3rd or 4th round. The guy is a thumper but probably too much like Elam for the Cowboys taste.

Still, I like him a lot.

That's probably because we're closer to the Combine than we are to actual games. Elam looked better on tape than he did at the combine.

That is also why I had Elam slipping to us in round 2... his stock is sliding a little bit because scouts get infatuated with the combine winners.

If he fell to us in round 2, I'd be happy.

Actually agree with you on Reid.. Not a big fan of his. I only put him there because he is more of the prototype of what I think they are looking for. Love Shamarko Thomas as well just don't think they will draft him and it seems he is creeping into the 2nd round. My hope is that we can leave this draft with either Vaccaro, Cyprien or Swearinger.

Please not Reid he would be worse than roy williams OU in coverage. I would take McDonald from USC before Reid. I hope Reid gets drafted into the NFC east so our offense sees him twice a year.

I think the Honey Badger, while small, could make a hell of a free saftey. Kind of like a mix between Ronde Barber and Troy Polomula. Its amazing how aware this guy is but some players just see the game differently and it slows down for them and the Badger is one of them.
