1) No competition for Maher despite the fact he was somewhat shaky last year.

2) The belief that they were just fine at DT and Marinelli would coach them up.

Both were big factors in a loss today. Watching our DTs get worked by a rookie LG and then a backup C was priceless.

Regardless of what you say about the DT's - the linebackers are not playing on nearly the level they played on last year. Last year they swarmed and didn't miss tackles - this year they can't tackle for ****

I see it completely as the opposite. I think they need to take the D play calling away from Kris & give it back to Rod.

People are quick to get on Smith when he makes mistakes so let's be fair and point out LVE was atrocious today. Worst game I think I've seen from him in his first two seasons. Missed tackles, bad reads, ran himself out of plays, etc.

But the DTs are blah. They just are.

Why? Rod plays the same way.............. passive zones, bend but don't break, not aggressive, more read and react.

They both should be crap canned by season's end, or sooner if the defense continues to get worked.

Our LB's will never excel until they don't have to face unblocked 300 lb men.

And is should surprise ZERO people that this defense still can't get turnovers. One big reason is the style they play. It doesn't force mistakes, it doesn't try to dictate to the offense............. it instead reacts to what the offense does and essentially hopes the other team makes a mistake.

3) Giving huge contracts to guys who don't deserve them.

4) Promising huge contracts to guys that don't deserve them

I dont care about a flashy DT. This defense cannot force turnovers. Our special teams and lack of turnovers kills this team with the lack of field position.

I will say...our highest draft pick was invested in DT.

That isn't insignificant. It just hasn't paid off yet.

Any coach sitting 2 high round draft picks with an underperforming DL should be questioned. Marineli should be fired and if richards doesnt get motivated to coach better he can go too.

Yes, ignoring DT--literally for years--was a huge mistake. Having CJ Anderson--who I'm pretty sure is on the street now--run for 100+ on us should've been a sign that our DL was not good. And yet we talked ourselves out of addressing the position.

Maher shouldn't have even seen training camp.
