Two Possible Churning Moves

I've been thinking about possible roster moves with this ever-evolving group we currently have and two players crossed my mind:

Seahawks LB Aaron Curry and former Carolina Panther Everette Brown.

I would inquire about Curry and bring Brown in for a workout. I think both former 2009 draft choices still have plenty to offer and with the likely changes at the linebacker position next year, I'd like to take a step or two to have more viable options.

I was wondering what the rest of the forum thought about kicking the tires on either guy?

Wow... I thought Curry was dominating in Seattle, he got demoted for a rookie? I'd absolutely give him a shot. Probably held back by their crappy scheme.

Yeah, I figure the situation in Seattle sure doesn't help.

And I think he re-worked his rookie deal to eliminate future guaranteed money as well.

Given what is likely to be considerable turnover in the linebacking corps next year (Spencer, Brooking, James) I thought it might make sense to kick the tires on a few young options.

Did Curry get released or just demoted? I heard he is still on the team. If he does get released, I would be all for briniging him in but I think a lot of other teams would put a claim on him also.

Is Curry available? That one kind of shocks me if so.

Take this for what its' worth, it was announced yesterday that he's been demoted to second string.

This after lowering his rookie contract to avoid a release already.

And I also heard from Pat Kirwan from Sirius radio (who is super-tight with Pete Carroll) that it would "likely take a 5th round pick" to get Curry in a trade.

I was thinking more of a trade.

Word is that it would take only a 5th rounder.

I am incline to give 5th rd for him but does he fit in our 3-4 system would be the qeustion.

Bad practice to give up draft picks for a guy who got demoted. He's just a step closer to being released, if not now then at the erhd of the season wjhere you can save picks and get him as a free agent.

Former No. 4 overall pick Aaron Curry has lost his starting strong-side linebacker job to rookie K.J. Wright.
Athletic and productive at Wake Forest, Curry was highly regarded in the scouting community entering the 2009 draft. He's failed to make impact plays in Seattle, though, managing just 5.5 sacks and one interception as a 30-game starter the past two seasons. He had been removed from nickel packages after a dropped interception and blown coverage last week. The Tacoma News Tribune suggests Curry could go on the trade block. With no guaranteed money left on his contract, Curry can be released in 2012. Sep 22 - 5:13 PM

So how did the top LB in that draft get demoted to second string? Play problems? Doghouse?

Edit: The above got posted while I was posting mine. Sorry.

I'm not at all convinced Spencer is going anywhere.

Me either. I believe he still can contribute and would sign a cap friendly deal to stay here. He's still solid in my opinion. I like his play against the run.

Yeah, but so can everyone else.

If you trust your scouts and they think highly of him, I pull the trigger.

This team has a lot of 'moving parts' at linebacker going into next season and I'd like to get a jump-start on sorting things out for the future.

If you can get a former #4 overall pick for a 5th rounder, I'd do it, provided that you feel that he's been miscast in Seattle.

I would jump all over that with both feet.

Bottom line: If such a highly thought of player like Curry has been demoted it's likely because he isn't a football player. He can't play with pain or he plays scared or he he doesn't love the game enough to make the sacrifices necessary to be successful. This is quite a common occurance and it isn't likely to change with another team.

Aaron Maybin is another example. Jets quickly picked him up after he flopped in Buffalo, but released him after a week. A lot of big-name guys flunk out of the league every year because they just aren't football players at the NFL level anyway.

Pass.

Time to pick up the phone and make some inquiries. He's strong and fast. The questions are is he a football player, is he coachable, does he have the head for it, and does he love the game. Not much on thinking we're going to steal a big player every time someone gets released from another team but you are occasionally going to find a gem out there. He's worth looking into assuming he really becomes available.

OTOH, he may have been set to motivate his ***.

This really surprising. Curry was supposed to be the safest pick in the whole draft. Was supposed to have a 0% chance of bust

Aaron Curry plays OLB in the Seahawks 4-3 scheme. At the combine, he was 6-2 and 254 lbs with a 4.52 fourty.

Would he play ILB or OLB in the Cowboys 3-4 scheme?

I read that he was good against the run but had problems in coverage.

He had 5.5 sacks in 2 seasons which is probably good for a 4-3 OLB.

He is a FA after the 2012 season.

He was benched. Seattle will probably shop him around to see if they can get anything for him via trade, and then release him after the season. They're already on the hook for his salary this year anyway, no need to release him now.

According to Seahawk fans, Curry only does one thing marginally well and that's rush the passer, and even that's marginal because he's just a 1 trick pony speed rusher that good OTs could probably adapt to if he did it full time. He's a huge liability in coverage and has no instincts and/or over pursues in run defense.
