These are what-if scenarios just for fun.

After watching a lot of movies, shows, history channels, etc etc., a friend posed 2 questions to me the other night I thought were interesting.

#1
We all have seen the movies of the end of the world, Armageddon and what not. Lets say the world was going to end in the near future(within 50 years). Would you want to be alive to witness exactly why and how it happens or not be there to see it?

Knowing the world was going to end, I would want to see it.

#2
You were offered a job at NASA. The mission was to get in some form of spaceship that traveled very fast but not quite the speed of light. You were guaranteed to see what exactly lies out there and beyond. You would also find out the answer to extraterrestrial life and see many planets and stars yet to be seen. The kicker is...this adventure would be a no-return trip that lasted around 30 years. After that time, the food, water and fuel would run out. Your family would be very well taken care of after your departure. You have to be at between 30-50 yrs old to go, would you?

Tough one, but once I hit 50, I think I would go just to see what's out there and get answers to my many questions.

...question. I would not care one way or the other. It's just one day at a time. Each one has as much promise as the last. When the door slams shut its done and it doesn't matter if I am there or not.

On numero deux I would pass. The only real questions I have are primarly about my family. I can't get those answers being out in space. The aliens have their own problems and possibly don't want to be bothered by me.

#1 - Heck yes, I'd love to see be there for the end! I mean, given the alternative... :)

#2 - When do we blast off? :D

No and no. If I saw the end of the world it would mean seeing my sons death and I wouldn't wish that upon anybody. Leaving the planet never to return to my family is equally unthinkable and frankly I could care less what lives on a planet I'm not on.

1. Depends on how the world ends, but probably not. Most doomsday scenarios aren't instant and I'd rather not watch loved ones succumb to pandemics, so on and so forth.

2. I'd like to say yes, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be brave enough to spend 30 years alone. What's the point of discovering cool stuff if you have no one to share it with?

Since I would be pushing 100, I'm saying no to the 1st one. Just not worth it.

On the second one, that might be a little more interesting but I'm sure I've already seen that one on Star Trek as well so no again.

Problem with 2 is that you won't be able to tell the world what you saw so it is a useless exercise. It is like a tree falling in the forest not making a sound.

First, sure if son and wife could be there with me to watch.

1. Think I'd choose to be alive but instead of witnessing the end I'd rather be doing uh, something else, during the last few moments of my existence.

2. I think I'd go crazy spending 30 years in total isolation. I'd probably start talking to my armpits or something.

1. Yes, I'd go out sitting on my roof putting down a 30 pack.

2. Heck No, my sister just had twins and I couldn't imagine not being around to see them grow up and I can't go 2 hrs with out checking my twitter, CZ, and Facebook let alone 30 yrs.

I agree with number 1 if it's a somewhat instantaneous... like a direct collision with another planetary body, but what if it's plague that takes the world down over the course of a couple of months or even years? Or perhaps even worse, what if it's completely instantaneous and no one knows what happened... Rogue black hole type stuff?

I think the black hole theory would be fun as well because if your gonna go why not go out getting your body completely reorganized!! As for the plague theory I'd be a sick dog sitting up there on the roof but I'm still gonna ride it to the end.
