Two TE/Two WR Set

An article came out sometime last season indicating the Cowboys were interested in running the two TE/two WR set. It may have been early in the season prior to the trading for RW11.

The premise is that with two competent TE's such as Witten and Bennett, along with two skilled WRs, the team can play an inside out game.

The article broke it down like this. The TE's challenge the seams of the zone's by running up field. This causes one-on-ones with the WR's who run ins and outs.

The reverse could also be true with the TE's running ins and outs as the WR's run the hash marks.

This seems like such a potent offense with a one-back set. But it requires the receivers to be aware of the blitz and break off routes. It also requires Romo to recognize and find the open man if a blitz comes.

This seems predicated on how well Austin does. Because what formation and routes and how it will cause the double to come from linebackers either trying to follow swift TEs or trying to make up ground on WRs in outs.

This puts a premium on Austin's grasp of the offense and his ability to beat his man.

Any opinions on this?

I do hope beats the - let's trade this untradeable player, or what TO/Jerry/Wade/Redball/Romo/Crayton/Newman said in the last twenty-four hours. Or how ESPN and the media will twist events from the G20 to the price of oil into a comment about Dallas not winning a play-off game in the last decade.

Or Crayton, who is better than a lot of team's #2 WRs. The idea that we need basically two #1 caliber WRs is a little bit much, especially with Witten in the offense.

If the offense fails as it did last year it's Garrett's fault, no buts. If he really needs a pro bowl skill position corp then he's just a tard. And he might be.

I hadn't considered Crayton. Good call.

I want to see a fair competition between the two and don't have any particular expectations about who would/should win, but if Crayton is the worst case scenario I think we're better off than a lot of teams (including the Giants).

I just recall the article going into detail about when this was used and how it puts the Tampa two defense into a bind.

I am so ready for football.

2 TEs sets? again... thats why the Cowboys drafted Anthony Fasano with a second round pick a few years back. Now, here we go again with this 2 TE BS... its the NFL not High School!

i will be happy with a playoff win before I die!

"TEH TOO TE OFFENSE DOES NOT EXIST ANTONY FASHANO PROOFS IT!!"

What?

we DID run the two TE last year. We didn't run it with Fasano cuz he sucked. Martellus Bennett, however, had well over 200 yards with 4 touchdowns as a raw rookie. He's going to be a terror when he starts to actually get his feet underneath him.

The patriots won 3 super bowls running the two TE offense.

I think there will be a concerted effort to get Bennett more touches and there will be times when he and Witten are on the field at the same time. He creates matchup problems. We'll do what we can to exploit those.

After we drafted Fasano, I remember an article from Pat Kirwan about the 2TE (Ace) personnel package, in general, and a very good article by Vela detailing how Holmgren's Packers gave Jimmy's Cowboys fits using that same personnel package. I'll try and dig up some links.

Steelers had alot of success with two TE set (Grossman, Cunningham) mid to late 70's. Witten and Marty B alot more talented than those guys.

I think a 2 TE set can work in the NFL and I would even say that I like it better then a 3 WR set but, and this is a big but, if you run that scheme then you have to have a guy on the outside that can make you respect the deep ball. You gotta have a buy who makes you fear a one on one match up on the outside. If you don't have that guy, then all you create is clutter in the middle of the field IMO.

The link below is Vela's article (2nd one on the page). It also links to the Kirwan article, but that one is no longer on NFL.com.
