END QUARTER 2

Two things to consider when thinking Smith at 9

You damn right I would pay two tackles. It's guard and center where you can cheap out. They are a lot easier positions to fill than tackle.

Blowing smoke. Tyron Smith is easily worth the 9th overall pick and he has displayed zero character concerns.

People like Fairley, you do have to be careful. The only way I would draft Fairley is if he started dropping. The guy has talent, but there are too many red flags with him. I wouldn't risk a really high pick on him.

That and we can easily make up the extra tackles' salary by taking the big hit and cutting Roy Williams. We don't need three high priced WRs.

For excellent young bookend tackles, you pay. who else in the league would have book ends like that? VERY few teams.

Exactly. A team with two great left tackles. Every team in the league would be jealous and the Cowboys would be riding high. I do it in a heartbeat. The tackle position just isn't a place to cheap out at. Especially with this kind of talent just sitting there waiting for you to take it.

If dallas keeps Roy Williams he will count 9 million this year on the cap if Dallas cuts Williams he will count 12 million on the cap. Its actually cheaper to keep him this year than to release him.

I wouldn't let a contract stand in the way of getting a good player at a position of desperate need.

I think you can look to Ware and Spencer to see how they will structure Free and Smith. You frontload and guarantee the first contract (Ware, Free) and it begins going down in price when you have to ink another (Spencer, Smith).

When the CBA is done is anyone's guess, but lower rookie salaries seem to be a lock. Smith will play 3 years on his rookie contract while Free earns his guaranteed money, then when it's time to redo Smith, Free's number will be coming down.

You can't do this with just any player or agent. Some will hold out once the guarantee is up. Messy situation. I'm going to assume the Cowboys know who they can and can't do this with.

Money can and does play a role in some decisions.

However if you cheap out on the idea of Taking Smith because of money then you might as well think back to the failed draft of a few years ago when we kept trading down for ST players...that did not pan out to well for us.

On a side note...your obsessive posting concerning smith is getting old.

Then this draft class is even worse than I thought.

If Fairley or Bowers or Newton were there at #9 and teams started calling for a trade, you have to be willing to listen.

Yes, it would be nice to have Tyron Smith at RT, but frankly, I think we're worse at OG right now...we've been drafting and developing tackles, but no guards.

I don't mind trading down...you can trade down quite a ways, garner other draft picks to help the OL, DL, and secondary, and still get a top RT. For a long time no one was even sure how to rank the top 4 OT's because none of them ranked up there with the top OT's of other years...there is no Joe Thomas in this draft.

However, any of those top 4-5 guys, who are all being judged by their ability to start at LT, can probably play RT for the next decade. So why not trade down and still get a quality RT, but add some picks.

If we were in the market for a LT, like many teams, there would be no question, but we're not, and I think we have enough needs on both lines and in the secondary to warrant listening to any trade talk that comes our way for #9.

What? BIGG didn't play well, but his play wasn't anywhere near as bad as Colombo's play. I'm pretty sure Koiser plans to resign here in Dallas and I'm sure Jerry and crew want him to resign.

Cutting RW will cost you some very large ones in cap dead space. It's cheaper to keep him. Surely he can make the team as one of the five WRs.

I really don't understand the "paying 2 tackles" argument.

Are people suggesting that Dallas not draft the guy because 5 years from now you'll have to pay him and Free more?

Seems ridiculous to think that way.

What I meant was that both tackles making a lot of money is a long term deal. When you cut Roy Williams it's a one time expense and you free his salary up in future years to pay other players, like two tackles.

No, the argument is now. How much would it cost now to pay Free who is a free agent and then how much it will cost to pay a unproven OT just because he was picked at 9. Nobody cares about in five years. But with the salary cap coming back you have to look into that.

Free isn't going to get max dollars after only starting for one year and they are going to cap rookie contracts.

It just seems like people are making excuses. The guy is without question the best tackle prospect in the draft and has the potential to be a franchise LT. It's a no brainer.

People still under estimating the importance of RT in the NFL, now a days. Look at how many teams are now 3-4 with edge rushers both sides.

No I never said Free is going to get top dollar. 5 year 35 million isn't top dollar. He is worth that. Look at what other OTs are getting.

There might be a new salary cap but you don't know what that will be or if it will be for this year or next year. You have no clue what the 9th pick will get. I also never said these are reasons not to draft SMith, just things to consider.

You actually would save money by cutting him, but you take a bigger cap hit if you do it this season.
