Probably the most productive 3t to play for Zimmer during his career was Geno Atkins 6’1 292.
2021 Zimmer went big with Pierce (345lbs) and Tomlinson (325lbs). So, using the 2021 Zimmer DT template I'd like to see Dallas use this strategy and go big.

Atkins was a good player, but Dallas has Micah Parsons and he needs help from his DTs in the run and pushing the pocket.

Well yeah, except Arman Watts was their starting 3t in their base that season!

So let me get this straight. Zimmer’s template for 1 of 7 seasons was to start 2 1techs at DT, the defense finished 24th after finishing top 10 from 2015-2020 when he played traditional 3techs (many lower round draft picks) and he got fired!
Seems like a template that should be avoided!

In today’s Nickel heavy NFL, it seems to me that the ideal DL consists of 2 bigger 3T types as your starters at DT. The day of the traditional NT that is a plodder and offers no pass rush push or movement skills is gone - especially with the plethora of teams that employ outside zone run schemes. Your DT’s need to be able to move laterally as well as hold up against double teams. That’s what makes the Jalen Carter/Jeff Simmons/Chris Jones (even if he’s not as stout against the run) types SOOOOO valuable. So, either of these guys would be an upgrade, but Grant just seems to have so much juice for a guy that’s 335+…and, I’m betting he’s got longer arms than Williams as well (Brugler mentioned in his preseason write up that Williams may have sub-32” arms).

a nose tackle has to do two things well: anchor and be able to move. Basically quick feet.
He has to be big enough NOT to get bull rushed; strong enough NOT to be tossed around; and quick enough to pursue.
Tough to find; but not impossible

IF they are able to consistently do that, SURE, they’re still worth something. But, as our own struggling NT is showing, when you DON’T do the things consistently people THOUGHT they were getting when they drafted you…

:banghead:

I’d LOVE to have 2 Derrick Harmon-types starting at DT with a really instinctive thumper at MLB. Then, surround those 3 with speedy talent…NOW WE’RE COOKIN!!!!! Jimmy’s overall philosophy on building a defense is still relevant today even if the player descriptions might be a bit different.
