I once heard the late great Hank Stram, former SB winning coach at KC tell a story from around 1970 about former NBA Superstar Wilt Chamberlain showing up to watch some Chiefs practices at training camp. Stram asked Wilt if he was willing to be timed in the 40 and to go through some drills.

The 7’1”, 265 lb Chamberlain supposedly ran a 4.5 and with his gigantic hands, caught everything thrown at him. Stram wanted Wilt to be signed by the Chiefs as a TE and FG blocking specialist. Stram said that Wilt was the best athlete he ever saw in any sport. Wilt ultimately chose not to sign, but Stram said if he wanted to, Wilt Chamberlain could have been a HOF football player.

Shaquille O’Neil was also an incredible athlete for his size. IMO, the world’s best male athletes are NBA players. That doesn’t always mean they can play football though...as in Rico Gathers.

Keith Smith
I was looking up his history and his agent must be on speed dial with SJones

There’s Wilt Chamberlain, then there’s everyone else.

Shaq moved so good for his size he easily could have played and dominated on either side of the ball
I doubt it. Football is more about leverage than height. Blocking is about leverage. Pass rushing is about leverage and dipping your shoulders moving almost parallel to the ground to get around the corner. Tackling is about leverage. Breaking tackles is about leverage. It would be extremely difficult for a 7-foot player to create the type of leverage you need to play football on the pro level. And then Shaq's knees would be shot after one season because that's the only place most guys would be able to tackle him.
