We don't have a lot of cap space. We have enough to re-sign some guys and maybe a couple of middling additions. We don't have to factor in paying rookies since that can be done after June 1st.

Stephon Gilmore will be the biggest present under your tree this year.
We currently have around $26M in cap space with an additional $10.9M coming due on 6/2. If/when we move on from Jourdan Lewis, we will gain another $4.7M in cap space. We need to save around $5M to sign our rookies in July.

This seems like the best possible scenario with Tyron and kudos to him for accepting it. The people who wanted to just get rid of him are crazy. He's too good to do that. Too versatile too. He can play both sides.

Now you need depth. Badly.
And let's not forget, Steele is a gimp and likely won't be ready for a few games anyway. Depth is good.

I believe all they need to cover this year is the 500k for a playoff win, since they beat Tampa in the WC last year. I don't think Tyron played anywhere near 50% of the offensive snaps, did he?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that only applies to incentives the player reached the previous year. Anything else is considered Not Likely to Be Earned and goes against the 2024 cap if reached.

Performance Incentives


With the mechanism for understanding per game roster bonuses laid out, understanding how on field performance incentives are accounted for will be simple. Performance incentives are categorized as either likely to be earned (LTBE) or not likely to be earned (NLTBE), with the categorization determined by looking at the performance of the player in the prior season. If a player reached a performance threshold in the prior year, the incentive is considered LTBE and counts against the cap. If a player did not reach the performance threshold in the prior year, it is categorized as NLTBE and will not count against the cap.


Similar to per game roster bonuses, if a LTBE incentive is not earned, it goes back to the team as a cap credit in the subsequent season, while if an incentive categorized as NLTBE is earned, it comes out of the cap in the following year.\

One of the best ways to illustrate this is to look at Seattle quarterback Geno Smith, and some of the performance incentives he had in his 2022 contract. Those incentives were:


  • 4,000 passing yards ($1M)
  • Playoffs ($1M)
  • Playing time ($1M)
  • Pro Bowl and 20 TDs ($500k)
Now, for Geno’s statlines for 2021 and 2022:

  • 2021: 702 passing yards, no playoffs, 20.48% of snaps played, no Pro Bowl & 5 passing TDs
  • 2022: 4,282 passing yards, playoffs, 100% of snaps played, Pro Bowl & 30 passing TDs

That’s correct. These are “not likely to be earned” incentives based on accounting and would go on to NEXT year’s salary cap. They are also practically not likely to be earned.

He’s missed over 40 games in the last 3 seasons. I love Tyron Smith as a once great Cowboy. But at this point, he’s an expensive swing T. I would have rather seen us move on.
I don't really understand the deal to be honest as it shows Smith counts just over $8M against the cap for 2023 yet if I remember numbers prior to the restructure had Dallas placed the post-June 1st release designation on Smith they would have just over $4M in dead money for 2023 and 2024 but would have saved just over $13M in 2023....money to which some could have carried over to 2024.

From a blue-collar type, I find it rather 'funny' that Smith gets $1M each just for showing up to work and participating.....with a max earning of $9M just for doing his job. Unreal.
It’s all about his injury situation after playing 10 plus years in the NFL. You make it sound like it’s a work ethic thing with him. Don’t be such a blow hard there gi joe.
