Tyron Smith drops out of Combine

A quick read of several posters' concern on this forum . . . .

Cam Newton - can't read a defense, only done it for 1 year, a lot like Vick except bigger and not a "true" QB, etc., etc.

R Quinn - Didn't play last season, so you're depending on the year before. Character concerns? Could we use him with Spencer . . . .

Prince - Doesn't have the 2nd gear, played poorly against top competition

C Jordan - Light in the pants, don't spend a high pick on a 34 end

P Peterson - more of a Safety than a CB, a lot of hype

Fairley - Again, not as much tape on him, character concerns

There really are no givens when you pick. No sure things.

At this stage, every player has warts, real or perceived.

T Smith has his questions as well, of course, but which player doesn't?

Marcel Dareus seems like a really safe pick to me.

And instead of using top 10 pick on a 3-4 D which doesn't seem like a good value, this guy will grow to 3-4 NT size.

Hell, he's already there. In another year he can be 330 no problem if Woicik wants him to be.

probably a trade down guy. I get sick to desth of reading lets trade down. You go to forums of all 32 teams and its all you ever read, lets trade down and rip somebody off for an extra 2nd.

Yeah , I`m a trade down guy if a linemen is picked. It`s not that I don`t value linemen , I just think the Cowboys could drop a few spots to pick one up.

Quite possibly.

But see, that's the same thing posters are saying about T Smith.

Will Dareus be able to play as well with the added weight? That sounds similar to will T Smith be able to maintain his weight/add weight?

Will Dareus be able to play NT? Kind of like will Smith also be versatile enough to play LT if necessary.

I would be happy picking Dareus for sure. But again, there are also questions concerning him as well - like all players.

A tough decision for the Cowboys could be deciding between Quinn and T Smith, imo. I'm assuming no trade down for the moment. There will be tough choices and given the team is picking at 9 and coming off a 6-10 year, they really can't afford to screw this one up.

I'm not worried at all if Smith will be able to hold his weight.

It's the guys who are never able to put it on at all ala Manny Lawson.

He was no longer running track. Spend 100% of your time getting ready for the combine and you can't put on pound. To this day Manny still weighs the same thing as when he came out.

considering this was covered by another thread HOURS ago, this thread is a perfect example of what is wrong with the Boys fanbase. Ignorant posters; and dumb ones as well.

Ditto for me. Fortdick leads the group of old school whiners who don't like 'certain' players and bash them at every opportunity.

The kid is only 20yrs old and he'll be able to not only put on weight but will put on muscle while gaining additional explosiveness and strength. Pete Carroll said that the kid was amazing at RT. The principal reason that he didn't play LT was because Matt Kalil (who's brother plays Center for the Carolina Panthers and his Dad play Pro football as well) came into USC as a freshman at 6'6" 300lbs (and he's 18 months older than T. Smith). If look at both of these kids, you can see the upside with T. Smith due to his low body fat, exceptional quickness, and young age. With college now behind him, T. Smith can now focus on this craft and body. With new Strength Coach (Mike Woicik/six Super Bowl rings) on board, I expect to see significant improvements to the Cowboys offseason program.

I don`t really see Fortdick leading anybody about certain players. Everybody on this board has an opinion and should be able to post it. I have never seen Fortdick go out of the way to bash certain players. Fordtick has the same concerns that I do when it comes to Smith. I formed my opinion of Smith throughout the season after watching several of his games . Excuse Fortdick and myself for not buying into the Smith hype. I can`t speak for Fortdick , but will try to jump on the weekly bandwagon and support the hot pick for the week if it makes you feel better.

I agree but solder bench press scares me, never played great vs top talent in college and his arms aren't as long as you would like for a 6'8" player.

Carimi and costanzo are looking better and better to me.

Carimi looked terrible in the agility drills.

Constanzo looked great in them.

I ma not a big fan of these 6'7" OTs thoughs. Too easy for guys to get underneath them and bull rush them and very hard for QBs to throw over them once they have been stood up.

My guy is still Sherrod. Big guy at 6'5" and 321 with proven LT experience and good athleticism at that size without looking like a tall, upright NBA Center.

Tyron Smith's knees worry me because when I life too heavy or bulk up too much my knees bother me. For a guy who needs to gain 25 pounds over his USC playing weight to maintain an NFL job that is a concern.

I think Sherrod is the safest pick among the OT. He has played in the SEC against some of the best in the country and was the SEC OL of the week several times. He is a steady , big , fast and consistent.

What a good post. The more I find out about Tyron Smith, the more excited I get. If he stands up to his reputation, I wouldn't have any problem taking him at 9, nor have a problem trading up to get him. On the NFL Network, during the combine coverage, one of the commentators (Mike Lombardi???-not sure) said the comparison they were most hearing was to D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

And I agree with the poster who said the real dilemma would be if both Quinn and Smith are there at 9, what do you do? [I guess it depends on whether Quinn could play the strong side.]
