Tyron Smith hype hopefully hes not another Alex Barron. I just remember Alex Barron was all hyped up a few years back in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Florida State and went 19th overall to the St. Louis Rams. I'm just hoping that Tyron Smith will not turn out being the same dud pick. If anyone has info comparing the two coming out of College please help ease my mind.

There were several concerns about Alex Barron coming out of college. Specifically his work ethic. Tyron Smith doesn't have any of those types of concerns attached to him. Tyron != Alex.

Alex Barron is a solid tackle prospect with great size, athletic ability, and a terrific wingspan. He has quick feet along with good agility and balance for a player his size. He gets into his stance quickly, but has a tendency to get a little high and loses leverage. He handles speed rushers well, and engulfs smaller defenders once he gets his long arms on them.

Barron has great potential, but isn't considered on the same level as some of the top prospects in recent drafts. He is a little inconsistent with his technique, and lacks the tenacity and the physical style of play you like to see in an offensive lineman. He could also stand to add a little upper-body strength.

Yeah, I'd say it's safe to say a lot of the things you hear about Smith were also said about Barron.

Quick feet, agile, physical specimen but inconsistent technique, problem with physical opponents and needs to add strength.

They aren't the same person, but their scouting reports are pretty similar. In addition there was also talk when Barron came out that although he was perhaps the top tackle in his class, he didn't compare favorably to top tackles from previous drafts.

If Smith came out last year, he wouldn't even have been a first round pick in all likelihood.

You could say the exact same thing about tons of players in this draft..

Bowers
Fairley
Newton
Gabbert

There are many more..You are also leaving out the other side of the argument..how about if smith stayed in school another year? Some say he would be a top 5 pick..luckily for Dallas, Smith may be available @ 9 to fill the biggest need on the entire team and has franchise tackle ability.

I've never heard anyone call Tyron Smith lazy. Barron's technique issues and playing to high were because he was (and is) a lazy freaking bum and everyone and their mother knew this. He was drafted solely for his talents and ability. Nobody that I have EVER heard has said Tyron was lazy and unwilling to do what it takes. The same things were said about Bruce Campbell last year though.

I don't remember anyone calling Barron lazy coming into the NFL, I remember some talk about his bad hand usage but there was far more positives (mostly based around his athleticism) than negatives.

We aren't talking about "tons of players", we were talking about Alex Barron and Tyron Smith and how they may or may not be similar in terms of how they were "scouted" coming into the NFL. (I'm not a huge fan of 3 of the 4 guys you just named, btw)

Obviously some of you guys think the guy is a franchise left tackle already and a sure thing, he just might be, but I'm not going to ignore what I've seen of his play, he looks far from worthy of the "franchise" moniker.

Alex Barron was a notorious lazy underachiever in college.

NEGATIVES: Tries to outguess defenders and gets beat. Lazy with his hands. Must make better use of blocking angles and learn to play with balance. Does not play with a nasty attitude and by no means a dominant drive blocker who opens big holes for the running game. Work ethic has been questioned.

ANALYSIS: Possessing a tremendous amount of natural skill, Barron has all the physical traits necessary to be an early pick and a productive left tackle in the NFL. Before any of that happens he must pick up the intensity and tempo in all areas or will never reach the level of achievement scouts think he is capable of.

PROJECTION: Early First Round

Barron's techinque was "raw" coming out as a Senior because he was too lazy to put forth the effort to do it properly. Davis' techique is raw because he played his entire collegiate career in his teens, and just turned 20 a few months ago. A much better comparison for Davis is D'Brickshaw Ferguson.

I do.

I don't see any resemblence of Barron in Smith.

You weren't watching then. He was notoriously lazy.

I assume you mean Smith?

You can compare Smith to whomever you want, as I said, I'm not saying Barron and Smith are the same person.

The start of the thread was about Smith's hype in comparison to Barron, and yes the hype is similar.

You could also mention Bruce Campbell, who many were talking about as a first round pick and ended up going in the 4th because his tape didn't match the hype.

I don't think Smith's tape matches the hype.

I wish he could have played in a bowl game or even worked out with the rest of the guys at the combine, but all we're going to get in his pro day. In my mind there are tons of questions about Smith, and the fact that people keep bringing up his age as a selling point doesn't help a thing.

You just made his argument because Bruce Campbell would go in the 1st this year with what we know about him now but Tyron Smith would still be rated higher.

I think you may not be following the "argument".

Bruce Campbell studed out last year for the Raiders as a starting OT.

No he didn't.

He played decent, but to say he studed out would be quite an overstatement.
