I simply do not buy it.

Broaddus keeps on saying it but I just do not see it. All reports are that Crawford was at about 270 a few days ago. Even if he puts on 15 pounds he is going to be light in the shorts to take on the double teams they will be sending at him. The idea is to sink your knees for leverage and hold on. That isn't doable when you are that easy to pick up.

I was just curious if anyone does actually believe it to be the case and how they envisioning it working. I just cannot see it.

I think Bass is gonna be the 1 and Crawford is gonna rotate with Melton at the 3.

I think Crawford is going to spend substantial time at each of them when people get injured...unless he's the first one that gets injured.

Broaddus may keep saying it, but I believe JG has said it will be sorted out after the draft as to where he plays. But to your point I don't see him there either.

As a pass rusher, Crawford MAY slide inside at times. In base defense, McClain is the likely 1DT. JMO of course

Now that I can see, him lining up over the A gap on passing downs. That is not the same thing that I have gotten the impression they were talking about though. Could be I am reading more into BB's comments than I should.

Me either, especially coming off an Achilles injury like that. He'll get pounded at the 1

Just looking at the guy, I think it would be a waste to have him anywhere but DE. He would likely make the most impact there, IMO.

I feel the same way about him as most felt about Ratliff at the Nose.

There is a difference between "1 technique" and "gap 1."

No, Crawford is not a t-technique defensive tackle. He is not going to command double teams on strength alone for fear of pushing the pile and play two gaps on every play.

He IS going to line up at the 1 gap and, like all of the marinelli rushmen, be expected to shoot gaps and get up field through a combination of athleticism and technique.

I really see a lot of movement on the line with the defensive front changing places on a regular basis.

The traditional 1-tech, as it had always been called, is going the way of the fullback and running game.

The coaches don't even know where he is going to play. I think they were waiting to see who they got in the draft to decide if they want to move him to DE, One Tech DT or Three Tech.

Personally I think they are better off putting him in the Three tech as a rotational guy but that Is just my opinion.

I agree with you but I keep on hearing they are consdiering lining him up at the 1 technique

I think the term is thrown around without true understanding of the meaning. Kind of like how when people get aggravated when you call a FB a RB. A FB IS a RB, just not the same thing as a tailback/halfback.

While I certainly do not disagree with your point, the one saying it is Bryan Broaddus.

I think it's possible that Marinelli will just find a way to line up his four best penetrating linemen, rather than forcing players onto the field because they "fit" the 3-tech or 1-tech. We might play more straight-up one-gap if Crawford is one of those four linemen, or mix and match when we put others like McClain in.

I fear for our run defense if that is the case. I just envision a simple combo and peel putting him on his butt 5 yards downfield.

Total guess here, but I would assume we are going to see Crawford in a bit of a hybrid role. He might spell Melton, get passing downs inside, and even play a little DE at times. Could be bad for him to not get comfortable with one position, but could be good to give him a favorable matchup week to week. I see 0 chance of him being an every down 1 tech, however. I think you need a bigger guy to draw the double team, and keep guys off your often injured middle backer.

I could see Crawford kick inside on sub packages. Nickel defense/2nd-3rd and long. Use quickness to get upfield and collapse the pocket. Similar to the Seahawks NASCAR dline, Melton and Crawford as the DT's. Selvie and Lawrence as the DE's.

Especially against some of the power run teams we play this year. Week 1 Frank Gore might have 200 yards rushing.
