I know he was asked to put on some weight almost as soon as he was drafted. Anyone feel if he stayed the same weight he'd be doing better? I am basically thinking out loud but I just wonder how much of a transition that is, carrying all of that extra weight and all.

I'm not sure that if he stayed at his original weight it would help him with his struggles in the running game. When he takes a blocker one on one he's fine but trying to control two lineman is too much for him right now.

Where the extra weight might have affected him slightly, and I mean slightly, is rushing the passer. He's pressured the QB when he goes one on one but has been a step late. His pure strength is incredible to watch as he is walking lineman back in the pocket 5-6 yds.

He needs to just learn how to use his hands to get off those lineman. He flashes that from time to time but he's not nearly as consistent doing it. He can make an immediate impact in the nickel pass rush if he continually disrupts the middle of the pocket like he's done in preseason. Every team we faced in preseason started out blocking him one on one and then by the end of the game they doubled him.

Interesting, thanks for that!

The one thing that I remember about him is that he was 275 pounds at the combine and his pro day (March 22) but I think he was more like 285 when he showed up at TC and I think he said the Cowboys want to get his playing weight a bit higher around 290-295 from what I recall. I also remember him being a bit hesitant about going up to that weight and wanted them to see what his power and ability to hold up at the point of attack was at this weight.

Regardless, I think he probably will gain a bit of weight from his rookie weight but I want him to maintain that quickness and explosivenss that he has. It just jumps off the screen when you see him hit someone on those college highlights. The only guys on this roster who can hit people like that are Ratliff and Hatcher.

I think he is going to be a good player but everyone will have to be patient with him as he is still very green in football development terms and hasn't played a lot against high level competition. I 'm actually impressed at how well he has done so far in his first rookie preseason and TC. For a guy this green and yet already this productive and with the measurables he has you can easily make the case he belonged in the second round. I think he has a good shot at becoming a starter next year and finally putting Coleman on the bench or recliner as the case may be.

I'm pretty sure he's already at the weight they wanted him to be at. He looks slower to me though. I, like you, was impressed with his quickness at the combine. It's been disappointing to see him move slower.

We always have done this since Parcells. They guy is a player and we put 15lbs on them and then they can't get to the QB anymore.

It likely will take a bit of time for him to fully integrate the increased body weight while maintaining most of his quickness.

He'll likely lose a bit of weight during the season and probably already lost some during TC.

Based on his 6-4 height and think frame I do think 285-90 would be a reasonable playing weight for him long-term.

I do too. It will take more than an offseason to put on 15lbs of pure muscle though. Some of his added weight is fat which is probably slowing him down. The only thing that will speed up the process is steroids and we don't want that. I just hope they get him back to having that burst and quickness we saw in the combine.

as long as he can get his quickness back, him at a higher weight would probably be fine. but for me personally, i'd rather see him weigh less and have more speed. but, i'm not a coach.
