Tyron Smith And Tyler Guyton

I don't know that I would compare Tyron to Guyton. Tyron was a special player. But what made him so special is something Guyton can work on. Tyron Smith was strong especially in his arms and upper body. When he got his arms and hands on his opponents the battle was over 99.9% of the time.

Guyton is the opposite. He seemed to lack upper body strength last year and DEs just swatted his arms away, especially on inside rushes. This is just my observation, of course, but at the end of the day, Guyton was not effective enough. When Chuma Edoga beats you out you are doing something wrong.

The good news is, hitting the weights and working hard can make Guyton stronger. That doesn't mean he can be the next Tyron Smith, but he can certainly improve.

No proof of that.
yeh i keep hearing guys like Broaddus keeping saying his " hear-say " is there's a question about immaturity.

But i dunno what the heck that means. Broaddus has not further define what he means by immature.
Is he coachable ? .
..
- is he constantly making the same mistakes repeatedly over again and just not responding or trying to respond to coaching ?
Work ethic in question ?

- I'd only be disturbed if a OL guru like Duke Manyweather has to say and think of Guyton.
Would Duke be open to teaching on Guyton again this offseason ? - Especially add that sorry Solari has departed.

i had heard pre-draft that Guyton had horrible hand placement technique and vastly inexperience in using his anchor base.
i saw during the reg season that Guyton did same way with bad hand placement and maintaining anchor.
How much can be corrected in his 2nd camp, first offseason, and 2nd regular season, and new & improved coaching ?

Guyton isn’t Tyron…but I’m you in that our fans expectations for rookies is absolutely insane.

Guyton played fairly similar to how Tyler S did as a rookie. Our fans need to have more patience with young players.

Tyron Smith was sure high 1st round pick as a RT from USC, who weighed under 300 lbs. The Boys believed he had the quickness and strength to eventually become a LT star, selecting him over JJ Watt of Wisconsin. They knew he needed to put on some size and get used to the NFL game. The Boys did not put him in the fire at LT in his first season. They started him at RT, while Doug Free was inserted at LT for one season. After one year Tyron and free switched positions and both were better at their new positions.

Guyton was unreasonably asked to start in the NFL in a very difficult position where no Cowboy rookie was ever asked to start. Flozell Adams was a long time LT, but as a rookie played RG. Nate Newton did not start as a rookie. Larry Allen did not start as a rookie, he only came in when others got injured. Erik Williams never started at RT as a rookie. So why are so many fans out there so negative on Guyton?

If so many good to great Olinemen for the Boys did not start at their destination positions as rookies, Flozell Adams, Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Tyron Smith, why were people expecting rookie miracles at LT with Guyton? Have some historical patience. It has been a long time, 44 years since the Boys blew away a first round offensive lineman pick, Howard Richards in 1981,

I expect a major improvement in the athletic left tackle Tyler Guyton in 2025, as well as Pro Bowl for Cooper Beebe. I expect Booker at RG to be very good as a rookie, as he has NFL strength and is a certified road grader.
Spot on. Well written. Thank you for such an informative post. Wish everyone would listen to what you said and simply gave Tyler Guyton some patience that he will improve his 2nd year, especially with a new and better Oline coach and assistants. Everyone needs to remember that Tyler Guyton as a rookie last year went through the gauntlet against the best defensive ends and actually held his own half of the time, so he can definitely use that experience to build on for his upcoming sophomore year. I am looking forward to this 2nd year of Tyler Guyton at Left Tackle for the Cowboys.

And now, they can’t just double Cee Dee and commit the rest of the defense to stopping the run. The Pickens trade is much bigger than some are thinking. It opens up a lot of things for Shotty and Adams especially if the Cowboys can be efficient running the ball.
Well said, I hope this offense runs smooth enough to make Prescott relax ,these coaches can put Prescott in good position to succeed ,with play action and motion. Can you imagine what this team could do if the QB plays well with a good running game.

You make a very good point. Agreed. But just for the facts, Tyron Smith was 6’5” and 307 at the draft combine

Comparisons are cute but the bottom line is non of those mentioned completely sucked their rookie year and Guyton SUCKED. So does Mazi.

Tyron was built like a freaking action figure. He always had incredible feet, but he really worked hard and grew into his upper body strength over his first few seasons, and then it was OVER for defensive linemen. He could mirror any speed rusher in the league, and then when he locked on, he mauled defenders so badly that he got hit with tons of phantom holding flags.

6'5" 320, had a freaking six pack, ran a 4.93 40, and had 36" vines for arms. Just a specimen. And he worked his *** off too.

Guyton has some pretty amazing feet too - when you adjust for his hulking size, they're probably at Tyron's level. But if he's got that level of lockdown upper body strength, he still has yet to grow into it. He played until his senior season at Oklahoma, and will be 24 years old when this season kicks off. Tyron was about 23 when he made his first All-Pro team. So maybe Guyton's a late bloomer, but I just don't think he has quite the same level of talent that Tyron did. Few linemen this century do.

Also, Tyron played RT in college because USC had Matt Kalil at left tackle. Kalil was a total freaking stud in college and ended up getting drafted #3 overall by the Vikings. He pretty much busted in the pros, but in college, he was the man. Tyron would have played LT on pretty much any other college team of his day.

I wasn't expecting a miracle they put them under fire just like they do other players didn't try even get his **** kicked all his rookie year and they left him in there he took his lumps he learned he got better I suspect, So will Guyton and in the end if something happens who cares if at worse we got a first round right tackle if he turns out he asked to play right tackle no spilt milk let's stop the crying and whining the guy has a shot to get it going..

Perhaps because the actual people (e.g. the front office and coaching staff), who made the decision to start Tyler Guyton at left tackle were not the ones who exercised patience..? Why are individuals outside that inner circle the target of ridicule?
He may have had growing pains last year but I don't mind the fact that they threw him into fire in my opinion it's no different than a guy like Troy Aikman taking his lumps game after game having a horrible year is rookie year and they stuck with him and eventually he turned out to be a three time Super Bowl winner...

He will get a chance and the old coaching staff and the old offensive line coach maybe just wasn't up to the task or the player himself just needed time or needs more time and again I've said it above at worse I don't see this guy being a bust in the NFL he'll end up being a right tackle there's nothing wrong with a late first round right tackle that by the way I believe we traded down and also got Cooper BB with him they go together now forever that makes it even easier to exercise some patience..

It was asking too much of Guyton to start as a rookie at left tackle after being a right tackle in college and one with some question marks to overcome at that. Yet, that is what the team did so that's all that anyone has to go off in evaluating him at the moment.

I don't think anyone thinks that he can't improve, but we don't know if he will or how much he will. I don't see anything wrong with having concerns about that until he proves it.

Frankly, I think we should have played Asim Richards at left tackle last year and let Guyton learn for a year or at least not have to start unless Richards failed. I know that would have been a risk, but I liked what I saw from Richards in limited action as a rookie. I also know that would have had fans and talking heads decrying the Guyton pick as a waste.

Move him to left guard and Smith from left guard to left tackle.
Problems solved.
