Tyron Smith was sure high 1st round pick as a RT from USC, who weighed under 300 lbs. The Boys believed he had the quickness and strength to eventually become a LT star, selecting him over JJ Watt of Wisconsin. They knew he needed to put on some size and get used to the NFL game. The Boys did not put him in the fire at LT in his first season. They started him at RT, while Doug Free was inserted at LT for one season. After one year Tyron and free switched positions and both were better at their new positions.

Guyton was unreasonably asked to start in the NFL in a very difficult position where no Cowboy rookie was ever asked to start. Flozell Adams was a long time LT, but as a rookie played RG. Nate Newton did not start as a rookie. Larry Allen did not start as a rookie, he only came in when others got injured. Erik Williams never started at RT as a rookie. So why are so many fans out there so negative on Guyton?

If so many good to great Olinemen for the Boys did not start at their destination positions as rookies, Flozell Adams, Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Tyron Smith, why were people expecting rookie miracles at LT with Guyton? Have some historical patience. It has been a long time, 44 years since the Boys blew away a first round offensive lineman pick, Howard Richards in 1981,

I expect a major improvement in the athletic left tackle Tyler Guyton in 2025, as well as Pro Bowl for Cooper Beebe. I expect Booker at RG to be very good as a rookie, as he has NFL strength and is a certified road grader.

The issue isnt that Guyton was bad in 2024, the issue is just how bad Guyton was in 2024. I'm sure he is capable of playing better, but he needs to make a massive leap to even be league average right now. Obviously my vote doesnt count but if I had a say Guyton would not be handed a starting position going into camp and would need to win the job.

Perhaps because the actual people (e.g. the front office and coaching staff), who made the decision to start Tyler Guyton at left tackle were not the ones who exercised patience..? Why are individuals outside that inner circle the target of ridicule?

If he cuts his penalties that helps a lot. Some of those penalties came from being over powered but most was poor footwork. Both can be fixed if he puts in the effort. We don’t need him to be Tyron but just avg is huge. Especially if the 3 guys in the middle are playing really well because running the ball helps the pass blocking

Guyton got a tough draw among elite pass rushers to start his career. I thought there were moments he showed promise particularly in pass protection but felt he really struggled with run blocking. It was clear he needed to really add strength and improve leverage and hand placement.

I think you're patrialy right with that statement. Improving the penalties along will be a pretty big improvement. Getting stronger is a must for him. The only part I would add and what concerns me the most is he seems to just have a slow time processing what the defender is doing to him. For some guys that gets better with more reps as the game starts to "slow down" for a young player. For others though it just never seems to quite happen.

I mean who would beat him out? Asim? Genuinely asking who his competition is.

Yeah thats the only legitimate competitor I see on the roster right now. Personally I would have rather them go get a lower dollar tackle to bring in as veteran competition instead of going so heavy at guard....Losing a Robert Jones to get a Lucas/Beachum/Anderson type of T who signed for similar money would have been a better way to go IMO.

At this point I'm assuming Steele/Guyton are the Tackles and the backup plan is just to move Tyler Smith outside?

Guyton has all the physical traits you look for and he was viewed as a project when we drafted him. Tyrone was a freak. Guyton has to put it together

A full off-season knowing what more is expected of him now. Weight and strength training. A better blocking scheme, and coaching improvements. He should show some bigger and better changes.
Discipline is needed to cut down the penalties, but that goes for the entire team.

I think Richards is capable and deserving of a shot, but because of Guytons draft status I’m sure it’s his position to lose. You know how that goes in Dallas.

It’s possible that Guyton completely busts, but it’s also possible it takes a guy into year three or even four…for the light to go on. That happens.

Just saying, but these aren’t questions a team ought have when trading premium picks for one year rental skill players.

It was a true example of the Cowboy Circus that Guyton was expected to start at LT.
He had only a relative handful of starts at RT in college. He was very raw.

Tyron Smith was a multi year starter at USC at LT. Completely different situation. YET the boys did the right thing letting him play RT for a year to acclimate to the NFL.

I don’t yet the insistence of not trying Smith at tackle. But I’m willing to see what Guyton does year 2. I don’t think we can wait all season for him.

I think they would’ve preferred someone taking that starting job from Guyton but those Chaz Green type guys couldn’t.
