Tyron Smith And Tyler Guyton

Tyron Smith was sure high 1st round pick as a RT from USC, who weighed under 300 lbs. The Boys believed he had the quickness and strength to eventually become a LT star, selecting him over JJ Watt of Wisconsin. They knew he needed to put on some size and get used to the NFL game. The Boys did not put him in the fire at LT in his first season. They started him at RT, while Doug Free was inserted at LT for one season. After one year Tyron and free switched positions and both were better at their new positions.

Guyton was unreasonably asked to start in the NFL in a very difficult position where no Cowboy rookie was ever asked to start. Flozell Adams was a long time LT, but as a rookie played RG. Nate Newton did not start as a rookie. Larry Allen did not start as a rookie, he only came in when others got injured. Erik Williams never started at RT as a rookie. So why are so many fans out there so negative on Guyton?

If so many good to great Olinemen for the Boys did not start at their destination positions as rookies, Flozell Adams, Larry Allen, Erik Williams, Nate Newton, Tyron Smith, why were people expecting rookie miracles at LT with Guyton? Have some historical patience. It has been a long time, 44 years since the Boys blew away a first round offensive lineman pick, Howard Richards in 1981,

I expect a major improvement in the athletic left tackle Tyler Guyton in 2025, as well as Pro Bowl for Cooper Beebe. I expect Booker at RG to be very good as a rookie, as he has NFL strength and is a certified road grader.
Good post I am fired up ,Dallas will run the football and help Prescott by allowing him to pass into less double coverages .Defenses will now have a running game to contend with ,this coaching staff will help Guyton right the ship.By the 4th or 5th game of the season Dallas will have one of the better offensive lines in football, and be a balanced offense.

And still, Vegas Over/Under win total is still 7.5..uhmmmm

Great questions. Most just had unreasonable expectations because he was a 1st round pick. But that is far from the whole story. He had a 2nd round grade and needed work.

This season will be considerably different for him on the field. A year of experience in the NFL, a full offseason, considerable time in the weight room and better OL coaches.

The Cowboys still view him as the long term answer at LT for a reason. Us fans will start to see that more easily in September.

Look, I'll preface this by saying I am not a paid professional.
Not even gonna mention Tyron Smith in this as I think Tyron on his worst day was better than what Guyton showed last year as a LT.

But I'll follow that up by saying I do get the All 22 and stand behind that it doesn't take a 6 or 7 figure coaching salary to see that a player is poor at his job in some cases.

Guyton failed miserably last year.
Tape don't lie.
He needs a near miraculous turnaround in order to just be serviceable as a starting left tackle.

But hopefully if he does start and fails its not for too long at the QB's expense, ie Chaz Green part II.

So yep, one of the biggest, if not THE biggest training camp positional competitions is at LT...
In Coach Riley we trust.

The issue isnt that Guyton was bad in 2024, the issue is just how bad Guyton was in 2024. I'm sure he is capable of playing better, but he needs to make a massive leap to even be league average right now. Obviously my vote doesnt count but if I had a say Guyton would not be handed a starting position going into camp and would need to win the job.
Yeah,
I watched the same guy you did.

I think the problem with Guyton is his heart. Just don't think he has the drive to be great.
I've brought this up a couple of times but will again. Guyton's transition from college right to pro left tackle appeared to be a little more than getting his footwork figured out. Which in and of itself was atrocious.

He appears to have fundamental balance issues(was on the ground alot) not unlike the failed number 7 overall RT pick Evan Neal of the Giants.

Both players are 6'7".
They both maintain a certain awkward playing clumsiness that looks similar to newborn 4 legged animals still not used to their legs being under them yet.

Just an observation that I'm not sure can be coached up or not.

That’s where Tyron excelled. In addition to having the physique of a cyborg, he relentlessly put in the work.

If not for back issues, he would have been the consensus best LT in the league in an era of elite LT play.

Of course I have no proof but I do believe what you're saying is true. Guyton will have a better year than last.

A full off-season knowing what more is expected of him now. Weight and strength training. A better blocking scheme, and coaching improvements. He should show some bigger and better changes.
Discipline is needed to cut down the penalties, but that goes for the entire team.
This. Let's let Riley and Adams work him and coach him up. Solari was not right for this team at all.

I think you're patrialy right with that statement. Improving the penalties along will be a pretty big improvement. Getting stronger is a must for him. The only part I would add and what concerns me the most is he seems to just have a slow time processing what the defender is doing to him. For some guys that gets better with more reps as the game starts to "slow down" for a young player. For others though it just never seems to quite happen.
His footwork needs improved. He gets in bad positions. But hopefully he’s stronger this year and gets his technique improved

And now, they can’t just double Cee Dee and commit the rest of the defense to stopping the run. The Pickens trade is much bigger than some are thinking. It opens up a lot of things for Shotty and Adams especially if the Cowboys can be efficient running the ball.
