UB's Thomas gets to Cowboy up
Texas native receives dream call from Jerry Jones

By Rodney McKissic

When he was 6 years old, Josh Thomas' father and grandfather handed him a No. 8 Troy Aikman jersey as a Christmas gift. It was the first of many Dallas Cowboys-related presents until one day Thomas finally asked his father about all the Cowboys gear.

"That's your team," his father said. "You're going to be drafted by them someday."

That prediction came true Saturday when the Cowboys made the former University at Buffalo cornerback a fifth-round draft pick. No need for the Cowboys to send him any more items with the big blue star. He already has plenty.

"I grew up a Cowboy fan and I don't want to be anything but a Cowboy," said Thomas, a native of Cedar Hill, Texas, who was selected with the 143rd pick overall.

I got a chuckle out of his phone call. Jerry said, "This is Jones, welcome to our football team." (paraphrased)

Thomas sounded like he didn't know who he was talking to. Then it appeared on the TV screen, and he put it together.

Talented and tenacious kid, but is he BIG enough? He looked awful small on the tape I saw....and that's in the MAC (Mid American Conference) Guess that's why he's a low round pick. But you never know...Tom Brady was the same way...smallish, but tenacious.

I'm rooting for this kid. My alma mater. GO BULLS GO!!! Saw him in a few games last year. The kid is aggressive and he can wrap up.

Hopefully he does well and becomes our fourth corner behind mike,Orlando and nmandi

Buddy Nix likes him. That's good enough for me.
