Great.

Guy just signed a new contract at UNM like last week. This pretty much sucks.

Something tells me his son Bryce has a lot to do with this. I bet that punk didn't want to play for UNM.

*Pure speculation, hell I don't even know if his son is a punk or not lol*

That's the first thing I thought of. The guy just agreed to a 10 year extension right before the tournament kicked off.

I still don't know what UCLA is doing. I don't see this as a step up from Howland. They're just looking for a big name, IMO. Alford's calling card is being a 1 and done in the tournament.

"I think it was a pretty big commitment, not only on the school’s part, but it was a pretty big commitment on my part especially what’s out there and the opportunities that are out there to show my loyalty to UNM and how much I appreciate UNM and how much I want to continue to build this thing."

Fans, players disappointed as New Mexico loses basketball coach Steve Alford to UCLA

New Mexico basketball fans were blindsided Saturday by news that coach Steve Alford had been hired away by UCLA.

The Lobos had just wrapped up another winning season that was topped by their second straight Mountain West Conference title and their third NCAA tournament appearance in the past four seasons. And just days ago, Alford signed a new 10-year contract that could have been worth up to $2 million a year.

Bryce Alford was a lock to sign with UNM before his Dad agreed to sign on with UCLA. Now, Bryce Alford signed a letter of intent to play with Saturday. Kory Alford, also on the Lobo's team, will transfer.

Also probably means that Aaron Gordon, the #6 ranked recruit in the 2013 Class ( San Jose California), who was strongly considering UNM, will now shift his commitment to UCLA.

This is really bad for UNM all the way around. They didn't deserve this. I have no problem with Alford going to UCLA but he should never have signed the deal with UNM if this is what his intentions were.

I agree. Alford is like the Lane Kiffen of college basketball.

He is really nothing like Lane Kiffin. There are certain jobs out there that you just cannot pass on. UNC, UCLA, UK, Ind...he should not have signed that 10 year deal, but UNM benefited greatly from him being there. They have to find the guy they think will continue the momentum.

Once a coach makes those comments, just bet your sweet behind he is about to walk out the door........happens time and time again.

I could care less about UNM or UCLA......and he has a right to go after the better offer as this is a job and he must do what is best for himself and his family.

I just get tired of these used car salesmen, I mean coaches making promises to schools, kids, and parents, only stab them in the back soon after.

Imagine if Alford was an alumni of New Mexico, one of your own, .. and you can then imagine how WVU fans felt when Rich Rod left for Michigan.

Good for you. In truth, Iowa never liked Alford and Iowa was as glad to see Alford go as Alford was to be leaving. New Mexico was not that way but whatever.

Somebody may as well be happy about it. Glad it's you Eric.

I'm not happy about this. I think it sucks for New Mexico. It's more a misery loves company thing because I'm still bitter with how he started looking for a better program right after landing the job in Iowa City.

Other then that, the only thing the majority of Iowan's hated Alford for was how he handled the Pierre Pierce issue. great coach but horrible character.
