Sleeper Watch: Marcus Dixon

March 22nd, 2008 by Ben Broman
I’m sure you’ve heard of Marcus Dixon. What you might not’ve heard is that he became a defensive end at Hampton and is an NFL draft prospect. And that’s why he’s the next sleeper watch target.

If you don’t know about Dixon, you must’ve been under a rock in 2003. He was convicted of raping Kristi Brown, a white girl who went to his high school. He was a straight-A student and star athlete at Pepperell High School and was committed to attend Vanderbilt before the incident. They found him guilty innocent, but because Brown was underage, he was convicted of statuatory rape and aggravated child molestation. The case was seen as racially motivated, some calling it a “legal lynching”. Dixon ended up at Howard after he got out of jail, and became a star athlete.

Dixon has great size and a frame to get bigger. He’s very powerful and a great run defender. He’s been described as the perfect student/athlete at Hampton, and has been a “gentleman” there, so character issues should be minor. He’s a hard worker and a leader. He also has a ton of potential. He’s an extremely intelligent football player.

Dixon’s speed - at least his timed speed - is terrible. Because of that, he’s seen as a DT/DE tweener. He would be a perfect 3-4 end, but might have trouble fitting into any other system. He’s not very explosive and was outrepped by smaller players at the combine, leading to strength concerns. He has trouble with technique and instincts.

All in all, Dixon will get a chance somewhere. He may not be drafted but he will definitely get an invite to a training camp. He overcame a lot to get to Hampton, and even more to do so well there. Some team will take a gamble on him - I think it’ll pay off, too.

In a Minute:

Measurables: 6-4, 292, 5.2

Pros: Great size. Powerful. Strong against the run. Good intangibles. Intelligent. Good potential.

Cons: Not great competition. Poor timed speed. DT/DE tweener. Some minor strength issues. Character might be a concern to some.

Pro Comparison: He’s similar to Adam Carriker, who was picked last year and converted to DT. He has similar size to Reggie Hayward in Jax.

Best Situation: As I said earlier, if he could get somewhere as a 3-4 end, he’d be in a really good situation.

Will Go in Round: 7. His size should be good enough to get him drafted, but he might slip further.

ESPN did a pretty nice feature story on this young man.

I hope he makes it.

Marcus Dwayne Dixon is an American football player and convicted rapist who, as a high school student, was convicted in May 2003 for the rape of Kristie Brown, an underage girl. These charges were later overturned and dropped to statutory rape.

Dixon was a grade A student at Pepperell High School and excelled on the football field to the point where he had been offered a full scholarship at Vanderbilt University. Kristie Brown alleged that on February 10, 2003 Dixon forced her to have sex, taking her virginity. She has stated that contrary to Dixon's supporters' belief she was never Dixon's girlfriend and although they shared classes, they barely knew each other. The jury acquitted Dixon of rape, battery, assault and false imprisonment but because Brown was only 15 3/4 at the time of the incident found him guilty of statutory rape and aggravated child molestation. Because of this Dixon was convicted at the mandatory amount under Georgia law, 10 years imprisonment. Ironically if he would have been found guilty he would have faced a much less severe punishment.

Many saw the case as racially motivated, especially when it was alleged by Dixon's partisans that Brown had claimed her father "would kill them both" if he found out because he was a racist. The President of the Children's Defense Fund, Marian Wright Edelman called it a "Legal Lynching". Also, the location of the incident, Georgia, spurred on the thoughts of racist bigotry.

Overturned conviction and release
Georgia Supreme Court overturned Dixon's conviction and he was released May 3, 2004. They let his conviction of misdemeanor statutory rape stand.[5] After Dixon's release both he and Brown appeared on Oprah in an attempt to clarify their stories. Dixon recently enrolled at Hampton University in Virginia with a football scholarship.

a "white girl"

You can tell a black kid wrote the article. Laughable at what that race has come to.

How old is Dixon now? Or more importantly, how old was he at the time? It seems as though if one does the math he was barely 18 if that?
