Just doing some browsing of how the team performed this year.

Ran across PFFs grade for the defense.

Of the worst 6 grades handed out, 5 of them were given to DBs.

Ranked from worst to...............least worst (?), I guess.

1. Newman

2. Brooking

3. Scandrick

4. Ball

5. Elam

6. Walker

Number 7 is James.

So, that's the ugly but I guess the silver lining is with a great, great, great offseason maybe only 1 of them remains.

Brooking / James are no brainers.

Newman is done. His last 6 games of 2011 were probably as bad as any CB has ever played. It was Alan Ball at FS bad.

Ball should be gone already because he's pretty much all he ever will be and it isn't much. This guy just finished his 5th season and still can't consistently look for the ball.

I thought Elam was okay to start but at about the midway point he kind of just stunk it up. Guess its hard to really assess him when 3 of the 6 guys on the list with him are DBs he has to spend time praying don't get roasted.

Walker was okay for a guy brought in off the street.

Probably not though. That's a lot of shuffling to do in a single year.

But hell, with as bad as Newman finished I'd put a 3rd or 4th rounder out there and let him take some lumps in hopes of improving throughout the year.

What is really sad is Walker is a below average CB that is why he was out on the street and he was one of our best...we have got to address secondary the this draft/next draft/and the one after that

All of the above need to go, but I think a new coach over ALL DB's will help, some LB's who can cover some area will be huge, add maybe 1 CB. I'm anxious to see what we can do with different staff/style.

what is ironic is those are the SAME cats that a lot of people on the board have a problem with...but when those names are brought up...you have the crowd on this board that will say "you cannot have steak at every position". And it is true that you cannot have steak at every position....but you cannot have 3 or 4 steaks on defense....and the rest be sardines!

Steak?

Hamburger helper would be a step up from what we have right now.

The Front office missed on a lot of draft picks in the secondary over the last few years and actually made it worse shorting the CB position for a few years also. Part of the trying to only carry 4 CBs on the roster so you can have that extra kicker thing. The downside is that you get no young guys coming up from that 4/5th/6th spot.

This looks about right on the surface. If Scandrick winds up with the title of 'worst defender standing', this defense will be in much better shape. Scandrick as your worst defender would be a nice problem to have.

This would also lend credence to the FO's recent statements regarding having confidence in our front seven. I don't buy it but maybe this is where that type of frightening overconfidence is coming from.

Getting rid of Campo is going to make a huge difference, IMO.

I agree completely.

I'll never forget that clip of Campo telling Scandrick "don't look for the ball."

If I had to guess, the team intends to pick up a FA CB who can start. And also draft a guy in the first 3 rounds with starter potential. I think they'll let Scandrick have another year to prove himself, with the draft pick as insurance.

So the roster would be: Carr (or Porter), Jenkins, Scandrick, Drafted CB, Ball

Safety, we're basically screwed here. Not much in FA and the draft is awful

Thank's for reminding me!

But, yeah...."don't look for the ball"! WTH?

Ranking below average in yards and points isn't easy when you defense ranks as high as 7th in sacks and 7th in rushing yards allowed.

You need DBs who really suck to pull that off!

But lets go spend top FA dollars and draft picks on Defensive Lineman.
