Whatever way you spin it, the rankings offer a barometer of how effective a unit is.
When you are 20th, you are below average in the NFL. that is the reality of rankings.
Except when they don't and when you're using the wrong statistics. Remember? Lies, damned lies, and statistics?
This is one of those situations.
After the first couple of games, the Cowboys were ranked right around 30th on yardage and not all that much better as far as scoring goes. They're now ranked 16th on total yardage and 8th on scoring D. That alone should give you some idea about how much more effective the D has been since the first couple of games. Here are some statistics for you:
During the first two games the D allowed 54 points (the number is misleading as turnovers in Dallas territory led to a lot of points in Week 2). Over the last seven games, the D has allowed 20 or more points twice (20, 21). They have allowed 17 or fewer five times (17, 17, 17, 16, 7). As I've said elsewhere, the scoring D is my real concern.
But..here are the yardage numbers:
During the first two games the D allowed 828 yards. Over the last seven games, the D has allowed over 300 yards 3 times (337, 304, 308) and held opposing Ds to under 300 yards 4 times (271, 298, 297, 283). That averages out to 414 yds vs. 300 yds, a difference of nearly 115 yds a game.
Two of those 17 pt, sub-300 yd gams have come against Philly and Green Bay, two of the best scoring offenses in the league, a fact made all the more impressive by the 12 minute gap in TOP this last game.
The defense played better this week than any week previous and that's just a continuation of a trend. If the D keeps playing like it did tonight and the offense gets things straightened out, Dallas will be very tough to beat down the stretch.

Would it hurt if his D made a stop on 3rs down though?
They made stops on 8 out of 15 (54%), which is worse than the season average, but is still more than good enough to win. The problem was the O only converted on 25% of theirs and didn't convert a single one until the 4th quarter.
