Umm, question about Flo

It's so he can mentor the new linemen on how to false start correctly.

I'm gonna guess that he's never gonna see the end of that contract.

Well, I will put it this way. They will need him this year. If for some reason there is no salary cap in 2010, Jerry may be tempted to cut him to save the cap hit in future years. If there is a cap, then he plays in 2010 unless he is injured, etc.

Contract Information for Flozell Adams

2/28/2008: Signed a six-year, $43.8 million contract. The deal contains $15 million in guarantees, including a $13 million signing bonus. 2009: $1 million, 2010: $5 million, 2011-2013: $5.1 million, 2014: Free Agent. Cap charges: $3.6 million (2009), $7.6 million (2010), $7.7 million (2011-2013).

Actually it's 2013. I seriously doubt he sees the end of that contract. Wouldn't shock me to see Jerry and co. keep him around 2-3 more years though. His guaranteed money isn't all that much really.

So what you're saying is if 2010 is uncapped teams all over the NFL can cut as many players as they want and their bonus money won't count against the cap in future years? Ya better check on that one.

He's probably around for 2 more years at the most. A part of the problem with Flo is that the rest of the O-Line makes a lot of penalties. I'll take a LT who false starts, but can take on top notch DE's one-on-one and can run block well. But then you need the rest of the O-Line to be pretty disciplined when it comes to penalties. Unfortunately that's not the case of the rest of the O-Line. But heaven forbid we actually draft an offensive tackle in the first round.

It doesn't need to be checked. It's right. If 2010 ends up being an uncapped year, then teams can dump all these big contracts if they want to without any repercussions.

In fact, it's the big main advantage of the uncapped year, to get rid of all that dead weight. Rather than what everyone else thinks: signing big names to huge contracts without any worries.

I believe I am correct. It will be an NFL fire sale if no cap. Now that I see his 2010 cap charge at over 7 million, this WILL be Flo's last year if no cap in 2010. Jerry will then sign younger free agent to replace him. If cap, 2010 his last year IMO.

NFL teams would be able to dig themselves out from under any ridiculous contracts they desired.

But with no cap, teams could also choose to keep any high priced players they wanted to provided their play was not in decline.

A player's cap figure would be a thing of the past, teams would go back to evaluating players based solely on talent and how they fit in with the direction of the team.

If an extension was reached during the uncapped season that would bring back some type of salary cap in 2011, teams would still be able to release anyone they wanted to for future salary considerations following the '09 season.

The moves would just have to come before the start of the new league year and free agency (March, 2011).

It would be foolish to count on an uncapped year. A deal could end up putting the cap right back to where it was.

Isn't that basically what I said?

I dont think anyone is counting on it. In fact I would be very suprised if there was an uncapped year.

Pretty much.

I just wanted to highlight that any such moves could also wait until immediately after the first uncapped season.

I would love the new restrictions on player movement because it would keep more of them with their original clubs.

When the NFLPA really looks at what would change in the uncapped season, the players will not be smiling.

6 years before unrestricted free agency, the average career is somewhere around 4 seasons.

Flozell Adams is a microcosm of this team over the past ten years.

He's a decent player, but he's never been the best and his false starts are just plain disgusting. I could see one or two in a season, but it's always more and the guy has been false starting for years now. So much so that fans are 'ok' with it as long as he plays decent.

That's the kind of attitude that probably has kept this team without a playoff win for the last 139 years.

Same with Ellis. He was here for so long people became used to him being decent and just accepted him as that. He had 8 sacks last season which puts him in the middle of the pack as far as NFL standards go, yet some fans were acting like we cut Lawrence Taylor.

How about we start having higher standards for some of these guys?

Witten and Ware come to mind. Two of the best in the game. Yet we are ok with them false starting and jumping offsides. And if it was once then fine, but it's not and it hurts the team.

And don't start saying I want to get rid of Witten and Ware. What I want is for them to be the most disciplined players in the game at their position.

I could even accept it if this team was out gunned physically, but when the season begins and every year we get the same old sloppy play filled with penalties and mental errors it becomes rather annoying to watch.

Please don't let this be the case in 2009 is all I am asking.

At least do me a solid and cut the penalties and mental errors in half and I think we could be a very good team that challenges for a title.

Why in the hell is he signed until 2014, making him like 39 years old?

Everyone complains about Flozell's false starts but I hear nothing about Columbo's. He's right there with Flo. So if we get rid of Flo because of it we need to get rid of Columbo also.

All in all, a bargain contract for a an experienced serviceable starting left tackle...
