If there was any doubt if Uncle Rico will be on the 53...

https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/201...ned-rico-gathers-away-from-the-dallas-cowboys

"After logging just 12 snaps and one reception in four preseason games, Gathers wasn't surprised when the Cowboys cut him with the intention of signing him to their practice squad. The shocker came a few days after, when Oakland contacted Gathers and offered him a spot on its 53-man roster.

Rather than earn $112,200 in Dallas, Gathers would make a league-minimum $499,990 with the Raiders. The money too significant to pass up, Gathers informed Jones he was signing with Oakland."Sorry," Jones told him. "We can't let that happen." Even though a promotion to the 53-man roster in 2016 seemed unlikely, Jones matched the Raiders' offer and paid Gathers like a full-time member of the team. With one signature, Gathers became the highest-paid practice-squad player in the NFL.

Since when do teams have to ask to claim a player of someone's practice squad? Those players are waived and don't have a choice. Maybe Oakland was going to do something shady like claim him, keep him on the roster for 1 week, then cut him and put him on their PS, I don't know.

also, even with the money being the same, being on the PS delays UFA by 1 season, so this story feels like it's missing something.

They have to stay on the active roster for three weeks I believe.

Maybe, but Oakland doesn't need permission. They put a claim in, and if no one higher puts a claim in, they are awarded the player, no? I'm not even sure if the players are notified as to who put a claim in for them until it becomes official.

Good to have deep pockets.

Jones cannot prevent a player leaving the practice squad as long as they are signed to another team's active roster. However, I am fairly certain the player can choose to stay on the practice squad if they want.

So basically Jones matched Oakland's offer and Gathers chose to stay rather than move.

When a player is signed off of another teams PS do they have to sign him to a new contract or just assume the contract that he has?

Did you read the article? This is exactly what happened.

Technically you don't claim a player off a PS. You claim a player off waivers, where yes, he inherit their contract. Or you can sign a player off someone's PS where you sign them to a contract that 99.99% will be a league minimum deal.

Right. The raiders wanted to sign him to their 53-man roster, but Jones matched their offer money-wise (not roster wise) and Rico chose to stay on the Cowboys practice squad at the same money he would have made in Oakland by being on the roster.
